Bottle (7.5% alcohol version). Pours dark red-brown with beige head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, burnt sugar, malt, dark fruits. Flavor follows the nose. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: very good.

(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 1 March 2015) Brownish amber colour with dense, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with roasted malt, dark bread, raisins and prunes. Malty, spicy taste with notes of dried fruit, roasted malt, crisp-bread and a balanced spicy bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and well balanced dubbel. Nice one.

(Keg at Viisi Penniä, 20150220) The beer poured muddy brown and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had candi sugar, butter and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were kandi sugar, malts, grass, chocolate and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and bitter. The strong diacetyl makes me wonder whether this beer is in its proper condition. Nice taste but somewhat off-putting aroma.

Dubbel, Belgian-style abbey beer, tasted when it was still brewed at De Halve Maan in Hulst; dark brown, sweetish caramelly taste, bit toasty, dark fruits, quite thin mouthfeel, alcohol noticeable in the finish and not well-hidden. It’s impressive how Emelisse has grown since this.

Nose is hazelnut, slight caramel, little sugar. Taste is nut, leading to coco, slight burnt sugar, light toffee. Mouthfeel is very thin. It avoids being oversee which sinks some abbey’s but it lacks depth beyond a certain nutty amiability.
