Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or ‘riggwelted’ when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance.

Riggwelter has a wonderfully complex palate with hints of coffee, bananas and liquorice combining for a classic Golding hop finish.

Pour a clear, dark chestnut brown, topped with a medium small beige head.Mild malty aroma, very unpronounced, some chocolate and biscuits, tad roasty. Taste is malty sweet, chalky with some woody feel to it. A bit of bitterness. Medium full body. Nothing special actually.

Bottle from some corner shop or other, fair play to them for carrying this... Dark brown with a hint of ruby. Translucent with lots of forced carbonation. Toffee, caramel and a trace of mango. Sweet and slightly smoky taste, which finishes quite bitter. Salted caramel on the finish. Not bad but a bit artificial-tasting.

500 ml bottle. Labeled as Monty Python’s Holy Grail Black Knight’s Reserve Dark Yorkshire Ale. Whew! Dark copper color topped by a small white head that disappears quickly. Aroma is toasted malt with toffe notes. Flavor is same as aroma. Toasted malt and salted caramel. Finish is dark cinnamon toast and one eyed newt. All hail Brave Sir Robin!
