Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and organic cocoa impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish – this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate.

Dark, ruby almost black pour, with a small beige head. Very sweet aroma, cocoa extract is evident, smells fake. Hard to find anything but sweet chocolate aroma. Even the roasty notes smell sweet. Mouth feel is thick and velvety. Finish is just more cloying sweetness, its like drinking chocolate milk. Not a fan.

30/I/25 - 33cl bottle from La Bièrerie (Illkirch, Strasbourg, FR), shared with Klaas @ home, BB: 31/XII/25, L23345 (2025-42)

Clear brown beer, small creamy beige head, a little stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: lovely, lots and lots of real chocolate, a bit fruity, sourish touch, gentle roast, some red currants. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: nice, gentle bitterness, some caramel, sweet touch, a little malty, nice! Aftertaste: chocolate notes, a little bitter, good roast, sweet touch, pleasant chocolate flavour!

550ml bottle and my first from Samuel Smiths. Pours black, moderate sized tan head, decent retention. Aroma is cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, sweet, hint of roast. Taste is the same, although the roasted element comes through more, and combined with a dry bitterness it offsets the sweetness well. There is a reasonable smoothness to this although the carbonation is a little too lively. Enjoyable although personally I prefer Youngs Double Chocolate Stout in the battle of the export beers, even though it is now owned by a macro.
