Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout

Pitch black in color with a faint tan head that immediately identifies this beer as BIG. Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, caramel and roast also make it even bigger. Roasted coffee and fruity chocolate notes are just the beginning of this stout's complex flavor. If this is wrong we don't want to be right.

2012 Vintage Aroma has nice chocolate notes with complimentary bourbon and vanilla character. There are secondary notes of coffee and oak. As the beer warms you pick up a bit of dark fruit but its fairly low. No hop aroma and only faint alcohol notes. Pours a deep black with a dark mocha head that clings to the edges but never really forms in the center. No lacing and mid sized legs. Flavor has more roast and alcohol than in the aroma but still well balanced. Starts with more sweet, dark chocolate and vanilla. Mid palate the roast steps in with some oak. The finish has bourbon, vanilla, a hint of dark fruit and bittersweet chocolate. There is some alcohol spice in the finish. Medium low bitterness and no astringency. Mouthfeel is full bodied with low carbonation. Medium high alcohol warmth and low astringency. Overall this is a really nice beer. I am usually let down by some of the hyped beers I trade for but this one at least partially lived up to the hype. As it warns the alcohol does become a bit hot though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz. bottle, sent from northernbrews (thanks a lot, Jeff), pours jet black with a small light brown head. Nose is adequately bourbon-heavy, without drowning out the base beer, with melted chocolate, some light liqueur notes, and bourbon - very decadent. Flavour is complex as hell, with the bourbon barrels so perfectly accentuated the already complex and decadent base beer, without making this boozy or barrel-dominating. There are notes of chocolate, liqueur and vanilla underneath, all luxuriated by the barrels. Very soft-feel to the body - very velvety and silky. The finish is both bourbon and chocolate, without any alcohol burn at all - even less so than the base beer. Heavenly stuff.

355 ml bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours oily viscous pitch black with a thin dark chocolate brown head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, dry peppery wood, vanilla fudge, bourbon, black pepper, lemon zest, coconut and burnt caramel. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and very tiny metallic with heavily roasted malts, bitter chocolate, bourbon, dark roast coffee, vanilla fudge, burnt caramel, alcohol and hints of black pepper and wood. Mouthfeel is round, soft, smooth, slightly boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with heavily roasted malts, vanilla fudge, bourbon, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, burnt cookies, caramel and hints of minerals, rich and great! Very prominent but elegant barrel aging.

Sampled at EBF on Saturday afternoon. Pours a solid black with a decent tan head with some retention. Smell is heavy on the bourbon with lots of chocolate and roast, and some vanilla and wood. Taste is chocolate bourbon and roast. Thick body with a creamy smooth mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. A big thick stout, one of my favorites of the day.
