Butty Bach is a Welsh term meaning ‘little friend’ – and this charmingly smooth premium ale has certainly made more than a few friendships in its time. We brew it using Maris Otter and Crystal malts together with locally grown Fuggles, Goldings and Bramling Cross hops. With such fine ingredients, no wonder it remains a firm favourite.

Cask at the Barrels, Hefereford, 17/10/13. Clear golden with a good sized off white head, good lacing ensues. Nose is light fruit sundae, toasted malts, grassy notes. Taste comprises light caramel, bubble gum, citrus, fruity tones, toasted malts. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, smooth on the palate. Looks and feels good, the internals are adequate. Would have added this as a golden blond were it a new beer!

Cask at the Three Tuns, Hay on Wye. Golden amber with a light fizz and a middling white head. Smell of vomit and dried parmesan, with some flowers. Citrus and floral taste, but the smell is always offputting. Is there something wrong with this? Not sure I’d want to risk trying it again to find out though.

Light to mid-brown with a hint of red. Sulphur aroma. Sturdy sweet/sour behind the Burton-y egginess. Tough balance to get right and they do.

Handpull at the 3 Barrels, Hereford. Golden beer, with a creamy head. Very smooth.

Cask at The Victoria, Birmingham. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is weak malt which leads to a medium bitter flavour with a smooth malty palate. It was served a little cooler than normal which probably suited it. A fine English session ale.

On tap @ the Haymarket. Pours amber with a nice head. The nose has biscuits, toffee and some sweet maltiness in the background. The taste is much the same. The palate is generally light to medium in body with a smooth texture and a reasonably refreshing finish. Overall, a decent session ale but didn’t go back for another.

Hand pulled into a pint sleeve at the ’Wrekin Inn’ Wellington, Shropshire on 20 Aug 2011. Strange orange hue to the beer, slightly off-white head on top, some lacing as the beer level sank. Malty molasses in the aroma, floral hops adding to the smells as the beer warmed in the glass. The beer tastes good, malts at first, brown bread type flavours, then the hops kick in more and the finish is quiet bitter (from the hops). All in all a very pleasant brew, it is often available in the pubs around me, so I see and have it on a regular basis, never bothered to review it before though.
