Has been proclaimed CAMRA’s Midland stout of the year repeatedly. Dark malts and roasted barley combine to produce a smouldering “chocolate” flavour followed by a mouth embracing bitterness. It’s really bitter and black.

Bottled. Deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, with coffee, chocolate and some slight burnt wet wooden notes. Flavour is coffee, chocolate, mild liquorice along with some tobacco and quite big bitterness in the finish. Wellbalanced.

Bottle from Beer Hive, Edinburgh [280513]
Jet black, brown cola-like bubbly head dissipates to no head at all
Aroma - Lots of roasted malt, coffee grounds, burnt notes, some chocolate
Taste of burnt roasted malts, roast coffee, chocolate, bit yeasty, treacle, thinnish dark malts, soft smoke
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body. Finish - initially rather dry, thie becomes sweeter with the drinking, dark chocolate, bit smoky, bitter roast linger, burnt cocoa
Overall - A reasonable stout, shame there was no head from the bottle. probably better on cask

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. The aroma is malty and unsurprisingly a little smokey. The flavour is rich bitter, with liqourice, malt and spice. It’s best served warm. Coming straight out of the fridge does it no favours.
