Has been proclaimed CAMRA’s Midland stout of the year repeatedly. Dark malts and roasted barley combine to produce a smouldering “chocolate” flavour followed by a mouth embracing bitterness. It’s really bitter and black.

Cask at the Plough, Worcester on 1st April 2023. Impenetrably black with tan foam and full lacing. Rich, roasty malts aroma. Bitter and intensely roasty in-mouth, with hints of smokiness, and a lengthy finish echoing the liquid taste. Full bodied with an engaging texture. Utterly exquisite.

Gravicask, 1/3 pint at GBBF Winter '23. Shared with Finn. Dotted spots on the glass from a diminishing beige head. Deep black body. Earthy malts on the nose, lightly smoked. Fine blended taste of chocolate malts, earth, and distant dried fruits. Roasted, slightly smoked, dark malt-driven finish. Pleasing. (Burton upon Trent, 17.02.2023).

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours almost black with a small foamy cream head and good lacing. Aroma has roast malts and chocolate. In the mouth there is a smooth creamy fexture. The dominant flavours are chocolate, malts and butter. Later on some bitterness comes through.together with traces of liquorice. Finish is dark and smoky. This is a quality beer !

1/5/2019. Bottle from Bottle Mix, Kettering. Pours very dark brown with a maroon tint and no head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, light smoke, ash and dark fruits. Light sweetness, medium to heavy bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. bitterness develops much stronger in finish to borderline unpleasant. Not totally sold on this one.

Gravity cask at the Little R'Ale House, Wellingborough. Dark brown, almost black, with a slight indigo hue. Spott brown head with evidence of natural carbonation. Malty aroma with some chocolate, liquorice, ash. Repeated investigations reveal earthy and berry qualities. There's some sweetness to the taste but it's drowned out by the starkly bitter hop. Bone-dry finish, just short of astringent. Caramel and bitter cooking chocolate notes in the aftertaste. Oily body, fairly flat. A pretty impressive session stout.

Cask at Cheltenham Real Ale Festival 2017. Pours dark brown, bubbly beige head. Roasted malts dominated the aroma, a little chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, hint of chocolate, a touch of smoke but not much considering the name, finish is bitter malts. Medium body, soft carbonation. Ok.
