Great pour. Aromas are of roasted malt, earth/peat, burnt chocolate and coffee. Dark, dark body with frothy tan head that sticks around for the show. Flavor is nice and roasty with a big, heavy coffee body that has a bit of a sting from some alcohol that doesn’t fit quite right and diminishes from the overall cohesiveness. It leaves me wondering how this would smooth out with age… hmm…

Bottle. Roasted chocolate/molasses malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Slight sweet licorice and smoky malt flavor with moderately strong hops finish. Light tasting. Spicier and hoppier than modern porters.

Jet black color with a hint of red around the edges. Medium-thin light brown head and spotty lacing. Strong roasted aroma with molasses and anise. Medium, dry body with burnt wood and licorice flavors. The flavor is pretty harsh, because the malt and licorice flavors are overpowered by spicy character. The finish is rather bitter with hops and spice. This beer is pretty scattered unfortunately.

Well what do you know, there’s a beer in this expensive 4-pack worth drinking - dark brown with impressive tan lace - very woody aroma, with molasses quite present, and a fennel/licorice smell lingering way in the back, along with an intense roasty/burnt quality - reminds me very much of a more bitter modification of a traditional english porter (as the description on the label states - bittersweet - charred wood and licorice finish - pretty nice, actually.

12 oz bottle from patroit 4 pack. Color is reddish brown with a small head. Aroma is very present - very original - like a woodsy burnt aroma with a licorice background. I am thinking wet forest with this as well. In the taste the burnt aspect takes a back seat to a watery licorice flavor. Also some cola like flavors. Mouthfeel is too thin, no substance to it. Started nice with the aroma but disappointed in taste. Still for Sam not a bad offering.

I don’t know if this is an attempt to recreate Washington’s homebrew recipe for porter ala Yards Brewing/City Taver, but its similar, yet not as good. This features an initial licorice and roasted malt aroma, followed by a flavor that is mostly roast and bittersweet chocolate, with a dry finish. Its a touch tart, giving it that primitive raw feel these Brewer Patriot series beers have. Soft fluffy mouthfeel. Burnt purple color, nearly opaque with a thick off white meringue for a head. Nice and unique porter.
