This dark unfiltered brew is medium-bodied with a deep roasted malt aroma. The molasses and licorice in this brew are authentic to American porters of the colonial era, as is the more assertive hop finish.

A deep dark porter with a thick moka head, with floaties sinking to bottom of glass. In aroma, an interesting aroma of molasses, chocolate, reminiscent of the molasse cookies we used to buy in the Bas St.Laurent, and light licorice. In mouth, a nice roasted chocolate, with loads of good quality licorice candies, a bit of smoked peat. Overall, I really enjoyed this one. Bought in Oswego, Nov. 2006.

Bottle from UncleMattie! Thanks Matt! Nose of molasses and licorice with minor coffee and hop notes. Deep cherry brown with a medium but quick disapating tan head. Flavor is chocolate with molasses and a little hops. Good if this is a recipe from 1790.

This four pack went from horrible to almost drinkable. This beer looked great, with an aroma of a regular porter. Flavor starts off fine, roasted malt, but the end of the flavor is soapy and mucky. Not good at all. Finished the glass but not the bottle.

A dark red-brown beer with a thick brown head. The aroma is sweet with light roasted notes. The flavor is sweet and very roasted as well as malty, but also with a acidity from the roasted malt is lingering in the background. I find it boring - it needs more punch.

Bottle. "Best Before" Oct. 06. Pours a deep brown with what resolves to an inch-high rocky head. Smell is deep with molasses with a drift of anise and chocolate nibs. Taste has more licorice than I care for in anything, especially when it’s riding over a porter. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its points, but I’m reminded of the half-smoked pipe full of vanilla tobacco taste of the 1790 Root Beer. Maybe a snudge of cola, too. Licorice bitterness also overrides hop bitterness. This whole Brewer/Patriot pack was an interesting experiment that I’m glad I tried, but I wouldn’t care to repeat it.

Pour is an almost black with a tan head. Aroma is molasses, coffee with some licorice and a small amount of hops. Flavor is not as overpowering as some porters. A very burnt taste greats the tounge with some coffee and dark chocolate. Nothing really stands out. Just average for a porter.

Bottle. Brownish beer with a cocoa-colored head. Sweet malt aroma with molasses. Hasher, woodsy, licorice flavor with brown sugar and molasses. Harsh flavors that just don’t meld nicely. Not good.

Bottle pours a clear very dark brown, with a large foamy light brown head. Blocky heavy lacing. Bitter leathery slightly smokey aroma, with some licorice or anise. Flavor is decidedly smokey and licorice. Black of course, and quite bitter. Dark roasted malts round it out. Feel was nice and heavy for a porter, with a soft carbonation. Lingering smokey bitterness stays with you. I imagine this would have gone well with the hemp GW was said to often have growning.....for making rope of course. Thanks Pinkzambia for sharing this "Patriot"

Dark dark brown with tall tan head. Very good lacing. Aroma is mostly of molasses and dark roasted malt. I didn’t smell the standard black patent. I do taste a little black patent in the flavor though. The flavor has a very balanced malt approach of black patent and chocolate malts. The molasses sweetness cuts the burnt malt dryness. The licorice is also a player in the flavor profile. What really makes it work for me is the way the molasses balances the burnt malts perfectly. Solid porter.
