The Lupulus Hibernatus is a dark strong beer. At the end of the boiling, the brewers add a pinch of cinnamon. The mix with torrefied barley brings this beer a powerful character. The After-taste is at the same time bitter-sweet, and finish on coffee aromas.

29/11/2014 @WBF - thanks to Peter for sharing Dark brown with nice steady head. Nose is dark fruit,s, toffee. Taste is soft, sweet, dark fruits, candy. At another occasion it had nice coffee notes but these were missing now.

Bottle @ Midlands Tasting Aug 14, at Richie’s Hop Palace. The general consensus tonight is this has a dandelion & burdock feel and I’d be inclined to agree, but with additional liquorice, caramel and malt.

Cork and caged 750ml bottle shared between 6 of us at the Midlands tasting on 24th Aug 2014. I had the first glass so my glass had a dark brown beer that was clear unlike the lads who got their portion later as the sediment began to rise in the bottle. The head was a tanned affair and stayed. Glad to see my suggestion of Dandelion and Burdock flavours and smells were picked up by others in the tasting, liquorice was also a major flavour note along with semi-sweet malty molasses, mild coffee grains and spiced fruits of the forest. A very nice rich and smooth beer.

750ml bottle. Pours very dark brown with a small head. Aroma is liquorice, coffee and dandelion & burdock. Taste has cocoa with a sweet liquorice finish. Syrupy mouthfeel.

Bottle at Midlands Tasting Group; hazy dark chestnut brown pour with a thin bubbly beige head, aroma has sweet jam, burdock and some molasses, taste has dark fruits, caramel a hint of spice, and some sour action.

Bottle 750ml. corked. [ As Les 3 Fourquets Lupulus Hibernatus ].Clear dark brown color with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, chocolate, moderate yeasty, dried fruit. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, fennel , chocolate, caramel, yeasty. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20140118]

Bottle from Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Clear, mahogany brown. Thick, bubbly, lasting, tan head. Sweet, toffee malt. Light, dried fruit. Taste is fruity dry. Some toffee sweetness, on the lips. Lovely, airy, creamy palate. Like whipped caramel ice cream. Finish has a welcome, light tart dryness. A hint of roast, nutty, bitterness, right at the end, ties things up nicely. Silly easy to drink.

750ml bottle. Cloudy, dark brown colour with huge, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, khaki head. Slightly sweet-ish, dark malty aroma, not Cola-unlike, slightly sugary, a lemon dash, some herbal hops. Taste is dry hoppy, additional dryness from the cinnamon, moderately sweet dark malty and slightly chocolately background, some coffee, hints of cinnamon which become more explicit the closer the finish, citrusy hoppy overtones grant some airiness, also hints of blueberries; no vestige of the 9% alcohol. Just another (I’m inclined to say) ’paradigmatic’ example that shows us again the inadequacy of the Belgian (Strong) Ale category(-ies). Solely sticking to the style, you never know what you get, neither concerning an outwardness like colour (the range is from blond golden to dark brown like this one here) nor flavours (almost everything is possible here). At the utmost you can know what you definitely won’t get. This failing is coexistently attended by the special attractiveness of those two Belgian style categories, its unrivalled eagerness: ’cause the surprise effect also ranges over taste and/or quality (or rating score in the end), i.e. from ... to ... (please put in your personal favs & fails). Oops! Almost forgot: positive surprise in this case, naturally.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, February 2014. Consumed at home Saturday 12th April 2014 Pours dark brown with filmy head a little spicey at end. Soft in mouth a little watery coffee shows, warmth from alcohol comes through, liquorice comes to the fore. A little soft grittyness, (like coffee sediment, but not so coffee flavoured). Mmmhhh... Its ok but I cannot finish it all (750ml bottle) A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1
