Urthel Samaranth is a real authentic tasting beer according to the old Flemish brewing tradition. A dark specialty beer of 11.5% with a subtle soft-sweet taste, rich scents of dried fruit and a refined bitterness with a hint of chocolate in the after-taste. EBC 55.

F: big, tan, good retention. C: coppery against the light to dark amber. A: malt, spicy, citrus peels, hint of vinous, candied fruits, pepper. T: rich malty, honey, citrus, vinous, fruity, candy sugar, hint of “woody”, raisins, syrupy mouthfeel but not disturbing sweetness is there, something like herbal but overall very nice balanced beer for this style, I like it, full body and obviously lower carbonation, 0,33l bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck.

Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy deep ruby pour with three finger creamy beige head. Long lasting, really good retention. Good, thick lacing. Yeasty on the nose, touch of caramel malts and toffee. Medium body, very softly carbonated. Th8ck and creamy texture, smooth mouthfeel and palate. Malty sweet taste with a touch of alcohol burn. Aroma is heavy malts, caramel and toffee, slightly herbal. A bit peppery on the tongue. A touch of honey. Strong alcohol presence, warming. Dry finish, long and boozy, slightly bitter. Overall, not bad.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours a brilliant amber with low foam. Aroma is rich of caramel, fruits under spirits, licorice. Body is dense, and sticky. Taste is sweet, but also rather spiced and alcoholic. Finish is medium.

Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy dark brown color with thick creamy tan-like head, lots of residue and sparkling appearance. Aroma of yeast, dried fruit, caramel and wood. Taste starts with medium sweet toasted malt and burnt sugar, follows by dried fruit and yeast, but without any acidity, mouthfeel is spicy, warming and medicinal, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, thick texture and lively carbonation in palate. Strong as hell...

0.33 l bottle from ’Slijterij Cevelum’ (Cuijk), bottled in September 2014 (two years old). Clear, dark mahogany with a medium large, slightly creamy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and a little yeasty aroma of prunes, raisins, caramel, some chocolate and a slight hint of clove. Rather sweet, malty, a bit fruity and slightly yeasty taste of prunes, raisins, dried figs, caramel, some chocolate and a touch of licorice, followed by a long, slightly bitter, a bit roasty and rather warming-alcoholic finish. Medium body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Solid Quad, not overly complex or sophisticated, but quite intense, at least in the finish, and very satisfying. I like it, although the alcohol is clearly detectable.

From a 330ml bottle on 7/6/2016. Pours a murky medium brown with a medium to big head. The nose features brown sugar, toffee, rye bread and Belgian yeast. Flavour wise, this is a sweetie - heaps of caramel, toffee, dates, sultanas and brown sugar. Finishes with a mild spicy bitterness which compliments the sweetness nicely. A slightly syrupy texture with soft carbonation. Cohesive, delicious and dangerously drinkable. One of the best quads I’ve had, and amazing value at around $7.50 a bottle.
