Trappist ale brewed with spices. We brewed a beer that we describe as 'slightly unruly'--our Trappist 8 is a beer you must take time to understand. Chestnut-colored and bottle-conditioned, with aroma of herbs and spices; initially floral and slightly sweet; character develops from light caramel to a lovely, dry, hoppy bitterness as the flavor opens. Brewed within the walls of Zundert Trappist Monastery by monks.

Bottle split at BBF 7, Bodegraven, 25/09/15. Lightly hazed amber/orange with a big old cream cap. Nose is caramel, melon, spice, grain, toasted brown sugar. Taste comprises dark fruit rinds, stewed prunes, earthy, dates, wooded notes. Medium + body, fine carbonation, touch of boost in the close. Ok for style.

330ml bottle. Clear, reddish dark amber colour with huge, thick, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Fruity and caramel malty aroma, notes of red berries, cherry, a woody touch of cedar or the like. Taste is fruity and caramel malty, minimally nuttily, almost chocolately, a touch of toffee, hints of red berries, a touch of cedar; smooth and soft palate. Not as rich and complex as the world-famous Trappist Ales with longer history.

Bottle, 12C. Clear pale amber with an off white head that lasts all the way. Aroma is doughy with pears and brown sugar. Carbonation is quite high. Lots of dough. Sweet and quite fruity with plums as well as pears and caramel. Dries out a bit with some cloves and pepper but not much bitterness. More like a strong Speciale than a Tripel, but whatever. Pretty good.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Clear amber body with a large off-white head. Lively carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of toffee, overripe apple, earth and copper. Flavour of fig, peppery spice, wholemeal bread and brown sugar. Medium body with a slick texture. Very fizzy. A decent Abbey Tripel, just not particularly complex.

Poured from a bottle courtesy of my Summer Secret Santa. Aroma is rather estery with a nice floral note and quite a bit of stone fruit, pear and bubblegum. A light phenolic note and a touch of alcohol spice. Medium light caramel, light sugar and faint toasted bread. Pours a hazy, copper red with a large, thick, rocky tan head that slowly falls into itself before levelling off at a moderate size. High lacing with moderate legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some caramel, light sugar and toasted bread. Medium light bitterness. Moderate ester notes of stone fruit, pear and bubblegum. Some light banana and phenolics. A hint of alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent beer, clean and full of esters. Some decent malt notes with light phenolics and bitterness. Bitterness is a bit rough though.

33cl bottle from Drink shop, Tallinn. Pours clear deep amber with an off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma with notes of dried fruits, spices and hints of Belgian yeast. Sweet and quite caramelly with some lightly spicy notes and a mild bitterness. Fair enough, but a bit to much on the sweet side for my liking.

Best lekkere trappist. Redelijk bitter. Alcoholsmaak blijft wel op de lippen hangen
