Don’t get to try strong porters that often and this one was a bit of a letdown. It certainly hides the booze well - it doesn’t taste like a strong porter. Some roast here. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottled, BB 30 05 14, large sample. Hazy dark brown color, medium frothy brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, bit coffee, bit licorice, some fruity blackcurrant notes, dark bread. Slight oxidation, bit metallic hint. Taste is quite roasty bitter, hint of sourness from the dark malts, bit sweet. Quite high on carbonation, which depletes any creamy mouthfeel. Sparkling. Slight salty on the tongue even. Finish is quite harsh roast, again carbonation on the high side. Ok brew.

Cask. Fairly roasty nose w little sweetness, quite a nice espresso roastiness, milky, good balance of strong porter character. Has a vinous red wine character as well.

Bottle at home. Pours dark brown, thin tan head. Rich aromas, roast coffee, treacle, wood. Lots of dark fruit on the taste and a light sourness which works really well. Surprised this wasn’t barreled at all. Good stuff.
