Bottle. A very dark brown beer, topped by a foamy, beige head. The aroma is quite roasted, with some dried fruits and bonfire. Quite dry on the palate, with roasted malts, coffee and some bonfire. Full to medium body, soft carbonation level. Lasting roasted finish with some bonfire hints. Not so much complexity going on, but it’s a fine beer anyway. 140420

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Mahogany in hue with a thick creamy head. Oak and fake chocolate and roasty malt and pepper and dryness and- oh dear- some quite aggressive leafy grapefruit hops that really don’t go. No, really not impressed by this, it’s very unbalanced. Rather watery too by the end. Not a good mild, think they’ve rather missed the point of a mild here. More like a really crap, weak black IPA. I don’t like it. Much as I like US hops, brewers need to realise that just shoving them willy nilly into every beer doesn’t always work.

Cask at the Tilly Shilling (JDW), Farnborough. Deep copper with a scummy looking tan head; aroma of roasted malts with a touch of smoke; richly roasted malt taste with a touch of chocolate; and a dry, earthy, finish.

Cask @ Stick or Twist, Leeds. Dark brown with a creamy off-white head. Has a small roasted aroma that includes a light chocolate nose. There’s also some spice here and it’s dominant in the ales taste.

Cask at the Hamilton Hall, JDW - London. Pours clear brown with a foamy, tan head. The nose gives toasty brown bread, slight earth, cocoa. Light sweet flavor with chewy cocoa, faint roast, more brown bread, some leathery berries. Light bodied with fine carbonation; decent condition. Finishes with lots of toasted leaves, brown bread, earth, some meat, berries. OK.
