Although all beers at one time were dark, few were truly black. Schwarzbier has some resemblance to an Irish stout in that it combines snappy bitterness with dry, coffee like roast flavors on a light to medium-bodied frame. The main difference between other dark beers and the Schwarzbier, is that the Schwarzbier is lagered so it is round, clean, smooth, and finishes with a crisp bitterness similar to a Pilsner.

Draught at the brewpub
Dark brown color, almost black. Dark caramel character, no roastiness; this is a good balanced Dunkel rather than a Schwarzbier, with some residual sweetness.
Clean, good, uncomplicated.

Dark brown. The aroma is largely caramelly with light chocolate notes. Mix of caramel and chocolate on the palate. The body is a bit thin. Like a supermarket schwarzbier.
