John and Hugh Labatt, grandsons of founder John K. Labatt, launched Labatt 50 in 1950 to commemorate 50 years of partnership. The first light-tasting ale introduced in Canada, Labatt 50 was Canada's best-selling beer until 1979 when, with the increasing popularity of lagers, it was surpassed by Labatt Blue. Labatt 50 is fermented using a special ale yeast, in use at Labatt since 1933. Specially-selected North American hops and a good balance of dryness, complemented by a fruity taste, provide Labatt 50 with all the distinguishing features of a true ale.

Ah, good old 50. The staple "old man" beer. I had this on tap as a joke about 2 months ago. Meh nothing to write home about, you’ve had one labatt or molson lager, you’ve had them all.

From old tasting notes. Bright gold color with a foamy white head. Clean malty aroma with a touch of graininess. Flavor is dry malt and hops. Finish is slightly sour and gassy.

In Quebec the beer your uncles and the old dudes in the bar drink. Gold with a thicker than average head for a macro-lager so it looks nice enough. The nose is a bit rough, taste wise it is earthy and less sweet than your average macro which is a plus in my book but ultimately it is somewhat below average. I could see this being a hipster beer in the Pabst Blue Ribbon vein.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of BlackIPA. Fucken chinchillin motha fucka. Pours a bit hazy, light yellow appearance with a white head. Corny, lemon, sweet malty, bland, slight cleanser aroma. A bit twangy, candy corn, lemon, cracker, spritzy flavor that finishes pretty dry. Actually pretty fucken damn decent. [Update: note the distribution of ratings! Really fucken high variance I haven’t seen since Samuel Adams Triple Bock.]
