The first of the Mild's brewed by Burton Bridge Brewery, following on from the success of the XL Bitter, the brewery was asked for a darker beer

Adapting the recipe slightly with the inclusion of caramel to darken the beer and produce a smoother flavour, XL Mild proved an immediate favourite.

Cask. Deep brownish amber colour with small head. Aroma is quite fruity/nectary with some hints of smoked wood and caramel. Flavour is dark dry fruits with some mild wooden notes. Ends in a bitter woodenness.

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Bristol 10/5/08. Chestnut coloured with a slight head. Light aroma of caramel and red fruit. Flavour was sweetish with a short, dry finish. Did not stand out in any way.

Cask, gravity at Merton Winter Beer Festival Feb’ 08 Poured dark brown with little head to speak of. Aroma touch sour but some fruits coming off as well. Tasted sourish and fruity with surprising amount of bitterness, but then it is a bitter masquerading as a mild, it was one of my least favourites at the event and really didn’t strike me as being anything like a proper mild.

Cask @ Market Porter, Borough. Pours a clear dark brown color with a small off-white head. Slightly roaste malty caramel aroma. Sweetish slightly roasted malty flavor with some hoppy hints. Dry malty caramel finish with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Dark ruby red color, small creamy brownish head. Woody hoppy, slightly toffeish nose. Par with flavor: woody hoppy - nutty, sweeitish mild. Good maltyness. Light but long lasting bitter aftertaste.
