American Amber Ale is the second-ever beer created by Rogue’s brewmaster John Maier back in 1988. This tawny amber brew with a toffee aroma, delicate roasted malt notes and smooth finish displays what beer judges call the “perfect embodiment of an American Amber Ale."

Ingredients: water, barley malt (Great Western 2-Row Malt, C40, C150), Cascade hops, Pacman yeast.

Clear dark amber body with a small frothy light brown head. Aroma of caramel and grassy hops. Grassy hop flavor with a caramel background. Second bottle labelled Red Fox Amber Ale: Gushing bottle with a huge frothy light tan head. Slightly hazy dark amber body. Sweet caramel and light grassy hop aroma. Sweet caramel and tea-like flavor. The current rating stands, but I’m a little less impressed by the beer soaked carpet that results.

I got this in the Sea Otter Amber 22oz bomber. Poured a reddish copper color with a lot of carbonation and very little white head. Looked very appetizing. Smells crispy and hoppy with a slight hint of malt. Nice malty flavor, the end is hoppy. Semi-citrus but also a distinct roasted flavor as well. Has a coffee flavored finish. The complexity of this beer is exciting and refreshing.

Bottle courtesy of Daalamar: Poured a murky brown color ale with a dirty white foamy head with pretty good retention. Aroma of roasted caramel malt with some noticeable hops. Taste is also noticeable by the large presence of caramel malt as well as some bitter hops. I also appreciated the low level of filtration as well as the full creamy body it offered. By no mean is this a great beer but it is surly one of the best amber ale I have had the chance to drink.

12 oz. loose bottle from Sam’s, Downers Grove. A nice dark amber, and there just may be a bit of haze to it. Head pours out think in my shaker, then settles to a thumb’s width. Nice hoppy smell. Taste is of caramel to nut-roasted malts with just a bit of ale fruitiness. No big northwest hops here, just a nice warm bitterness with perhaps a nod to the British. A bit more dry than other reviews have indicated, but the astringency is there. Nice and easy drinking.

Clear amber color with decent light tan head. Aroma of caramel malts and a bit of hops. Pretty good. Seems to be the perfect amount of carbonation to allow the two or three malt notes to explode in my mouth. Nice sweet caramel, dryer slightly astringent malt, coffee and a bit of nuttiness flavors. Finish ends up tart from the coffee influence and then a little sweet caramel. Pleasing beer. Body is a bit weak.

Ruby with a disappearing off-white head. Rich aroma of caramel, dried fruit, honey and flowers. Caramel sweet flavour with a noticable hoppy finish.

Dark amber color with a small head. Aroma is malty, taste is a combo of malts, hoppiness, caramels, and a bit of toffee. Well balanced taste and a clean finish. Nice amber ale from Rogue.

Medium amber-carmine color with an orangish-tan head. Heavy hop and caramel-mocha aroma, and a malty hop taste with touches of mocha.

22 oz bottle-pours a big creamy to rocky tan head that laces with amber color. Aroma is hops with secondary medium malt. Taste is caramel malt quickly followed by lighter hops with a bite, grapefruit. A malty IPA, good carbonation.

Biggish off-white coarse-laced head over dark red body. Soft, sweet roasty malt aroma with a touch of hops. Deep, sweet taste of smoky, roasted malts with a toffeeish, marzipany flavour combined with a very nice, grainy hop profile. Yet another excellent beer from Rogue; drinkable, interesting, harmonic.
