American Amber Ale is the second-ever beer created by Rogue’s brewmaster John Maier back in 1988. This tawny amber brew with a toffee aroma, delicate roasted malt notes and smooth finish displays what beer judges call the “perfect embodiment of an American Amber Ale."
Ingredients: water, barley malt (Great Western 2-Row Malt, C40, C150), Cascade hops, Pacman yeast.

Bottled (BB 09/2006)
A bit hazy red ruby color, steady creamy off-white head. You can smell the aroma of Cascades from far after opening the bottle, notes of bready malts, tobacco and yeast too. Rye-bready malty flavor which to a bit caramelly and then to overwhelming bitterness. Long bitter aftertaste.

2005 bomber consumed on 1/17/06. Caramel orange/tan colored body shows strong magenta tints, almost a chestnut-ruby glow to it and is bottle conditioned with a large dark beige head, well retained, provides lots of lacing, is a Rogue beer, in other words. I can smell the cascades before I even pick the beer up to smell it. The dry goldings hops seem to loosen the citric dominance of the cascades and I get more a dry floral aroma than a straight up hard citrus. Though don’t get me wrong, it still has a good deal of dry orange zest. Crystal malt is very dry, while there is a faint trace of caramel sugar and a bit of nutty and fruity yeastiness in the nose, predominantly cherries (dry), apples (not green) and then some light toffee. Hops keep it dry and quite citrusy though. Very high aroma strength. Flavor begins with a profound dryness brought on by a citrusy cascade hoppiness that is leafy, slightly aged, perhaps tending a bit more bitter than flavorful. The dryness seems exacerbated at first by the crystal malt, but before I can even think to complain, a sticky, chewy, rich, but yet truly English maltiness grows firmly. Soft, sweet, really resembling dry butter toffee, with a substantial caramel chewiness. Heavy whipped cream mixed in to melted toffee, with some rich earthy barley notes and sugary brown bread. I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but the malts are . . . .English. At least on the finish, that is. Really reminds me of a British dark mild, actually a lot like Norfolk Nog, or Gales Special Mild. But the American hops and clean (up front) American maltiness breaks off the similarity at that. Tremendous amount of flavor packed in, and while the hop flavor complexity is minimal, it is still terrifically drinkable. No alcohol apparency, light nuttiness on the end, tight carbonation and smooth texture as always from Rogue. If it werent for the little bit of hard, borderline papery crystal maltiness up front, this would probably me my vote for the best example of the style.

(Bottle 35, 5 cl) Clear, dark amber with a handsome, off-white head. Quite light-bodied - almost watery. Lovely caramelish nose. Dry with notes of roasted malt and caramel with a short, hoppy finish. 031205

650ml bottle from Utobeer. Slightly hazy, amber/ruby beer with lasting tight beige head. Intense American hop aroma with some chocolate, grapefruit. Choc/coffee flavours with tangy hops which tingle on the tongue. Pink grapefruit on finish. Some brown sugar and raisins as well. This got better as the bottle went down
