Ridgeway FES matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal liquorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the aging process. Beneath all this change, sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hops.

Bottle picked up from Westholme, Londis, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon, had this 15-05-08 Dark brown pour with beige head. Sweet roasted flavours with some dark bitter chocolate, a touch of vanilla enters the fray before this is all swamped by the roasted bitter flavours, quite nice foreign stout.

Bottled (BB 10/2009)
Dark ruby - almost opaque - color, good creamy beige head. Aroma has smokey roasted malts and wood, milk chocolate and similar lactose smell than in unclean taps, I have noticed similar in some Czech lagers. Quite full-bodied. Lactose, light smokey-licorice-roasted malts flavors. Alcohol and hops kick slightly in the finish. Aftertaste is warming with licorice flavors. This is more Sweet Stout than FES, but there is some similarities to Camerun version of Guinness FES. Didnโt impress me, I wonder if cellaring matures this one to better (I doubt, too unlively brew).

Bottled. Black beer with huge beigeish brown head. Aroma is milk chocolate, licorice, slightly wooden and also caramelly. Once it warms up some roasted malts and wood also become present. Flavour is mildly roasted malts, big time smoked wood as well as some mild bitterness. Rather sweet flavour overall. Hides the alcohol well in the flavour, but gives a little warming kick when drinking.

Transluscent dark brown color with reddish hues. Small tan head. Wonderful sweet roasted malt aroma of coffee and treacle. Wow, this is really good! Complex dark malt flavor with notes of dried fruit, licorice, root beer and molasses. There is an unlying hop character that balances this stout nicely, but the malt is the real star here. The long flavorful warming finish is sublime. This truly is a World Class Stout!.

1 pt 9 fl oz bottle thanks to brewfiend! Pours black with a little brown head. Roasted malt aroma, slight chocolate, dried fruit and whiff of liqourice. Light to medium body. Dried fruity flavour with an underlying and persisting malt flavour. Finish is malt dry, not much bitterness just a lasting malt flavour. Nice with a not too heavy stout which has itโs benefits.
