Ridgeway FES matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal liquorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the aging process. Beneath all this change, sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hops.

Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, red-brown with a big, light tan head. Dark malt aroma with some cocoa and caramel. Medium to big sweet flavor, great chocolate notes, light leafy bitters, very mild roast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, light licorice, cocoa, light mocha, faintly bitter and lightly fruity. Pretty excellent beer. The abv isn’t detectable at all. Very smooth.

1 pint 9 oz bottle from Blanchard’s in Allston, MA. Poured into a snifter. Insanely dark poor, nice thick off-white; almost beige head. Had light lace. Aroma is a deep roasted malt and raisins. Good amount of complex flavors that include; Flavor is semi-sweet with notes of roasted malt, bread, licorice, and prunes. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. A nice warming alcohol touch after the sip, nothing over-powering. I wouldn’t guess 8 % ABV. Very easy drinking. Really good stuff. Worth whatever you pay, I bet it would be heaven on tap.

500ml bottle. Pours black with no head. Aroma is faint, bitter coffee, roasted malts and alcohol. Taste is burnt malts, roast coffee and licorice. Palate is a bit too fizzy for a stout for me.
