Ridgeway FES matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal liquorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the aging process. Beneath all this change, sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hops.

Bottle. Huge head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are licorice, chocolate, wood, smoke and coffee. Rich licorice in the finish.

Bottled. A very very dark brown beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some bread. The flavor is quite sweet with notes of roasted malt, bread, alcohol, and prunes, leading to a dry roasted and woody finish.

Bottle from Rainhall Drinks Co, Barnoldswick. Near enough black pour with a fading tan head. Nothing out of the ordinary in the nose, some dark choc and roast action with dark fruit notes. Taste was roasted malt heavy and dried out towards the finish slightly. ABV quite well smothered. Drinkable if somewhat forgettable fayre.

Bottle bought at Corks, Bristol. Near black in colour with reddish tones and a slight, off-white head. Aroma of black coffee, prune and caramel with a hint of tobacco. Flavour was sweetish, with more fruit, milk chocolate and some ash in the finish. Was a bit cloying towards the end of the bottle, but still very good.

[Bottle at the Good Food Show 2009, NEC, Birmingham] Deep brown-black with a slight creamy head. Cough mixture, coffee, treacle and smoke. Quite sweet, and gets a bit sticky - I was glad I shared the bottle as I would struggle to drink a lot of this. Not bad though.

50cl bottle from Alko. Pours dark brown in color, with a beige head. Aroma consist mainly of roasted malt and coffee beans. Chocolate and malt flavor, alcohol is not very noticeable. Nice dry finish.

Very dark brown beer with weak, beige head. Aroma is nicely complex: chocolate, roasted malts, coffee and hint of alcohol. Flavour is quite roasted, some liquirice, nice hops in end and overally flavour is not so complicated than aroma. Very easy and nice to drink. Ridgeway Foreign Export Stout is nice and balanced beer, positively thing, this beer is easily to enjoy.

Bottle as shown. Pours a very dark brown with a large creamy light tan that lasts awhile. The aroma is roasted malt with chocolate and caramel. Good sticky lacing along the glass. Thin on the palate with a rich roasted malt with brown sugar and chocolate. Easy to drink hiding the alcohol very well. A very good Stout from Hepworth.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Deep tawny brown with a fast fading toffee coloured head; aroma of caramel, malt and a hint of coffee; warm, rich, vinous mouth feel, with leather and tobacco, coffee and raisins, all nicely mixed in a swirl of complementary flavours; the finish is dry and smokey and pleasantly warming, without the alcohol being obtrusive. An excellent stout to sip slowly.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a nice tan head. Light roasty, caramel/toffee aroma. Toffee/caramel flavor with light roast and light coffee. Medium-plus bodied. Caramel lingers with light roast and light backing hops.
