This beer is another one of those beers that has been around since our early years. Though, it has gone through some changes over time. We wanted to brew an American IPA. We wanted it to have and aroma from which you could pick up everything that you like with the style. To achieve this, we hopped and dry-hopped it with five, high alpha acid, American hops. And, almost by default, it got its name. High Five! Initially, this beer clocked in at 7.5%. But in order to make it a little lighter we took it down to 6.5.%. And, while the hops are still the same, we've increased the amount of hops and dry-hops numerous times. Because, times change. And, even though you got a hop-punch from this in 2007, the amount of hops in it then would not have given you one now. But since it's more, a lot more, you do!

Pours deep amber into a Sam glass. White head with little retention recedes to coat surface. Sweet tropical fruit aromas. Sweet caramel and tropical fruit upfront turning to slightly sour earthy resin in the lasting finish.

Bottle. Pale amber with a white head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, grass, peaches, slight cardboard. Bittersweet with peaches and just a little caramel. Earthy, slightly spicy. Citrus flavours get a bit lost. Bitterness is subdued relative to the hop aromatics, but spices linger a while. OK, but I don’t think it quite made the journey.

Draught @ The Rover. Pours slightly hazy deep golden with a small creamy white head that sticks to the glass leaving lots of lacing while slowly dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet with bread, orange zest, butterscotch, grass, apricots and hints of pine. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter, tiny sour and very metallic with bread, mandarin oranges, lemon zest, unripe plums, grass, sheet metal and hints of biscuits and pine. Mouthfeel is round, harsh, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter and tiny sour with mandarin oranges, pineapple, grass, bread and hints of metal, citrus zest and peaches. Rather nasty metallic taste.

Bottle. 1 pint .9 oz. from Natures Way Market, South Berwick for $7.59. Beautiful hazy amber color. Real thin white head that still showed some retention. High carbonation died down after several minutes. Had to hit a warmer temperature until I could get a mixture of sweet malt and pine hops in the nose. Underwhelming nose aside, the taste is still good. Lots of Earthy hops. Pine, whole cone like bitterness. Caramel blended with the herbs and hops. Very abrupt short finish. It’s decent but nothing to really search for.

Whole Foods, P st, DC 500ml ($5): Pours a bronze colour with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, with some earthy hops and some citrus hops. Taste is slightly bitter. Plenty of malty sweetness. Not an American IPA at all, which is a refreshing change. Leaves some hoppy aftertaste. Good body. This might be a bit past its prime, but the hop character is still very much intact.

Hazy deep amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish, half a centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of fresh bitter, resiny hops, some metal, caramel and a good deep malty note. Medium-bodied; Earthy, pungent malt bite with a good dose of fresh hops up front that fade to spicy sweetness at the back end. Aftertaste shows more earth and alcohol than anything else, with a touch of sweetness and the grassy, resiny hops at the very end. Overall, a nice, rather earthy and less Americanised IPA, but still good to try. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 18-November-2011 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 10-April-2012.

Pours clear deep gold with a tall, sticky off-white head. Spicy, floral, citrus hop aroma. Very pleasant. The flavor is lightly bitter with an overpowering sweetness. A bit thin. Too sweet for an IPA.

500 ml bottle-shared by jtc-pours gold with offwhite bubbles. Aroma is soft fruit/spice/resin, some sweet light/medium malt. Taste is spice/resin hop bite that fades, some sweet light/medium malt-caramel.

Bottle. Pours light caramel brown with off white head. Nose/taste of citrus, sweet malt, caramel and pine sap. Nose is fantastic and crisp. Taste is very short with almost no finish - just bitter and sweet caramel. Pleasant, just not enough there.

En av flaskorna i Dugges IPA-triologi och kanske den snällaste. Som de andra bra humlade men lite för söta för mig. Härlig citrus- och tallarom som färsk är riktigt god.
