Kriek de Ranke is an unsweetened cherry beer of mixed fermentation. It arises from a blend of old Flemish ale, lambic and 25 kilos of sour cherries/Hl.

Bottle at Oud Arsenaal. Hazy red liquid with small to medium white/light pink head. Aroma of almond, paper, mineral, glue, cherries and apples. Taste is dry and light to medium sour with notes of paper, cherries, almonds and glue. Lots of cardboard notes going on, probably a bad bottle that got oxidized for some reason.

750ml bottle. Pours bright red with a thin head. Aroma is tart and cheesy, with cherry and raspberry seeds. Taste has sour yoghurt and a little cherry to start. Tart puckering finish. Not a lot of fruit. A little short in the mouth.

Aroma is sourish with woody and earthy notes. Also some cherries and hints of vinegar. Flavour is rather sour with woody notes, cherries, juicy notes and hints of spices. Good stuff, would go fine for a ’real’ kriek.

Aroma is rather juicy with cherries, sourness and earthy notes. Flavour has lactic tones, wood, tart cherries, some grapefruit and earthy tones. Rather tart stuff still.

If Christmas isn’t a good time to have this beer, I don’t know when is - turbid pinkish pour - nose is a pleasant mixture of sweet and sour character - cherry pie filling and red grape sweetness are balanced by dusty/earthy notes, moderate acetic character, and moderately leathery funk - smells pretty awesome, actually - moderate acetic and lacto notes up front in the flavors, followed by bitter cherry skins and pits - a tiny bit of sweetness is covered almost immediately by some vinegar and lightly funky phenols - finish is mildly briny, a little oaky, and moderately earthy/funky - nice balance, with a serious amount of lambic character - I am surprised it is only 30% of the blend - merry Christmas to me.
