Kriek de Ranke is an unsweetened cherry beer of mixed fermentation. It arises from a blend of old Flemish ale, lambic and 25 kilos of sour cherries/Hl.
Taste: Full cherry flavour, sour and thirst-quenching. Gentle oaky notes from oak-aging.

750 ml bottle bought from Etre Gourmet. Pours a wonderful purple color with a small white head. A woody and sour nose. The flavor is big tart cherries, some light sawdust, cherry skins. Good. Not too deep, but solid.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Bright pinkish purple appearance with a pink head. Really a maroon appearance. Tart, black cherry, cherry skin, a bit woody, dark grape, plum, rich fruity aroma. Rich dark berry, raspberry, big black cherry, fairly tart, a bit funky flavor. Super easy to drink.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. It pours deep red, with a quickly dissipating head. The nose is artificial cherry, tart strawberry, jam vinegar and balsamic. The taste is tart cherry, jam, vinegar, grapefruit, lemon, a touch of metal and some lingering alcohol warmth, with a dry, tart finish. Medium body, fine prickly carbonation and good balance. A very enjoyable sour ale.

Slightly hazy red colour, light pink head. Aroma of krieken, cherry, cherry pips, bitter almonds. Fresh sour flavour, tart, quite sweet, but still quite dry, light bitter. Dry, astringent finish.
Quite lovely.

25 cl. draft in a De Ranke glass @ Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas – cannot believe, I haven’t tried this one before – A: dark raspberry red with a foaming, hello kitty pink head – S: yay, strong lambic smell here, tart with sour & acid lemons with some kind of sour & acidic indefinable blend of raspberries & kriek – T: musty, sour & acidic, very tart lemons, hint rainwater, very lambic-like, Cantillon-like even, great, cellar dust, acidic & sour with sweet raspberries in finish (I know that this is a kriek but if I had to guess the fruit, I would lean towards raspberries), some concentrated sour kriek as well, still sweet touch berried underneath – B: medium with slight puckering sourness – got to love the sour stuff – great stuff here

Cask @ Moeder Lambic, Fontainas.

Bright red/purple colour. Smells sour, cellar, yeasty. Tastes not that sour, not that fruity. Mouthfeel is quite dry, small co2 bubbles.

Clear red color, small slight pinkish head. Yeasty, artificial, chemical and a little musty smell. Taste light sour, not much more, but pretty nice. Carbo and body nice as well.

750mL bottle, pours hazy pinkish red with a small white head. Aroma of barnyard funk, potent sour cherries, and a touch of vinegar. Flavour is very complex, with a good amount of tart cherry skin, barnyard funk, cherry juice and light-to-medium tartness. Complex and well-rounded. Always a pleasure to drink.

2008 bottle. Clear red with a greyish pink head that fades to the rim. Smells of cherries, lemon and old vinegar. Taste is very woody upfront with cherries and their stones, a light barnyard funk and a little sweetness. Some metal in the dryish end. Surprised how much obvious cherry was left here. Nice balance of flavours and textures here - it’s light but mouthfilling and nothing gets in the way of anything else.
