26th May 2019 Slightly oily looking and semi opaque dark brown beer, the few bubbles fuck off in no time at all. Smooth palate, semi dry, modest fine carbonation. Tangy dark malts, an undertone of bitterish coffee. Wonky chocolate. Slight must before some rich and bitter ripe fruits come in. Smooth finish. Long bitter linger. Plenty of flavour but a bit harsh in my book.

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie. Pours deep dark, nice frothy mocha crown. Aroma is woody treacle, soft roast, liquorice hints. Taste covers similar ground, rich and thick on the palate, strong liquorice, woody roast, nutty interludes. Excellent step up from the midnight porter.

Bronckhorster's flagship beer, at Modeste. Very thick, very dense, creamy, lacing, coffee cream-like, deep beige head, ink black robe. Strong, perfumey bouquet of coffee beans, bitter black chocolate, mocha ice cream, black pepper, leather, nutmeg, dried prunes, mocha ice cream, cigar tobacco, raisins, fried black olives. Quite intense onset, thick layer of dried fruits, restrained in sweetness with sourish and light cured meat-like umami accents, sharpish minerally carbonation but still thick, heavy, oily mouthfeel. Deep toasted nuttiness en black chocolate, leathery accents, explicit black coffee-like roasted bitter ending, burnt toast, spicy, dry and long, well-hopped, whisky-like warming alcohol. Much more coffeeish roasted bitter than I expect from an imperial porter, even more so than many contemporary imperial stouts - feels like a classic English style RIS. I expect less bitterness and more sweetness from an imperial porter but whatever: this is a great beer by itself, a thick, black, roasty sipper. Would love to revisit this in more comfortable circumstances and at a more befitting serving temperature...

0.33 l bottle from ’Gall & Gall’ (Zutphen), best before November 2020, cellared for over two years. Jet black with a medium large, frothy, stable, light brown head. Sweetish-malty, quite roasty aroma of dark chocolate, praline, mocca, sole licorice and faint hints of dark fruits. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty and a bit fruity taste of dark chocolate, praline, coffee, licorice, dark fruits and hints of wood, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy-dry, a bit vinous and minimally tart finish. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice sipper, well-balanced, quite complex.

Bottle, courtesy of Benzai during EuroSwap 1/2016. Pours dark brown with a short-lived but beautiful head. An imperial porter that lives up to its style: Dark but not burnt, strong and heavy, yet not overdone. Caramel and toffee aroma, pleasant texture and carbonation. Only slightly boozy, but also nicely warming.
