I have a review of a on-tap ’Ripe’ version at the end of this rating: October 2008: Brought this 33cl can back from Crete with me, purely to review on here. Deep ruby red colour, good tan head, it looked good in my Westmalle chalice. The aroma was of Peat Bogs, toast and burnt malts, very interesting. All the aroma smells were in the taste, apart from the Peat Bog, it was replaced by raisins and plums. This beer had a good feel to it, the alcohol is well hidden and the whole experience was one of pleasure.21 Oct 2012 in Valkenburg, Holland: Cafe De Grendelpoort is having a Bockfest and this was one of the brews on-tap. It was down as ’Amstel Ripe Bok’, the barrel had been stored for a year and this was the 2011 Winter brew being broached for the little pub-fest. The dark ruby red colour I was expecting turned up, along with a small but complete head of tan coloured bubbles. The smell and taste were semi-burnt malts and red berries (no peat bogs this time, unlike the tin I found in Greece). Fairly mellow and smooth feel to the brew, maybe because of the years wait, but as I’ve never had a fresh on-tap one I don’t know if it is always like that. I’d have had another but there were more to try.
