American brown ale flavoured with coffee, apparently not brewed in the States as usual with Evil Twin, but in the brewer's home country, more precisely Fanø. Pale greyish beige, irregularly but tightly lacing, mousy, uneven-bubbled but stable head slowly showing gaps over an initially near-clear mahogany brown beer with ruddy-vermillion hue, some thin strings of sparkling here and there, turning deeply misty with sediment. Aroma of coffee grounds and freshly made espresso, ground walnuts, caramel candy, unsugared tea, 'natural' blood-like iron, bayleaf, nutmeg, dry carrot cake, dried orange peel, bitterroot, wormwood. Clean, crisp onset, more malt fruitiness than estery fruitiness but some hints of dried fig and pear here and there, restrained in sweetness with medium, somewhat stinging carbonation, smooth, slick body; 'dry' hard-caramelly malt backbone with a deeply toasted-nutty, bittering edge, soon amplified by a strong, rooty, dried grapefruit peel- and tonic water-like hop bitterness as well as very pronounced coffee, as in black coffee powder adding another dimension of spicy bitterness with strong roasty effect, as well as a pleasant aromatic espresso-like note retronasally. Some caramelly malt 'juiciness' pierces through this multi-layered 'end bitterness', keeping the whole in balance and maintaining high drinkability. A vague metallic note lingers at the back. Spritzy, malty and very firmly bitter, this does indeed qualify as a typical American style brown ale thanks to the firm, long and spicy, citrus peel-like hop quality, reminiscent almost of American craft beers fifteen to twenty years ago (and longer) - and considering how brown ale, never U.S. craft beer's greatest success to begin with, has been in decline since then, this feels like a blast from the past. The hop bitterness is just a bit over the top perhaps even for the American interpretation of the style, distracting a bit from the malts, but in general, this is a very well-made example, with the coffee adding an extra 'craft' character to it as well as adding extra bitterness and spiciness, especially aromatically speaking. Another fine Evil Twin product, less extreme than I am used to from this brewer, but still with a tangy twist to it. And there aren't enough Anglo-Saxon brown ales anymore around these days so I welcome it.
