5 Golden Rings is the only golden ale in our 12 Days of Christmas Series. We spiced up the natural pause in the classic song with cinnamon, allspice and ginger along with the delicious sweet and tangy flavor of golden pineapple.

Really, truly, the website should separate Belgian Ale - Strong between pale and dark, very different. Just saying. I lifted this 12.7 oz bottle out of the 12 Days of Christmas assortment purchased from the brewery last year for a side-by-side comparison with the barrel aged version this past weekend. Didn’t happen so the rating takes place tonight. I have my Delirium snifter ready, I pull the cap on the bottle and pour. The appearance is a clearish dark gold finished with a slender skim of silvery foam. I smell ripe fruit, straw and grain. Now for a drink. Pretty decent, one of the few times I think I like the regular version more than the barrel aged one. Fairly sweet apricot, malt, pineapple, white bread, Granny Smith apple and field. Some spiciness but not too much. Nicely dense. Damn, the folks at The Bruery can put together some fine beers.

Keg at Brewdog Paddington, London. A hazy dark golden/orange coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Sweet, fruity, orange, spice aroma and taste. Slight sourness/funk. Decent enough.

Bottle thanks to the mighty Buckeyeboy. Pours a copper hue with a small white head. A nice very sweet aroma. Slight, some sour fruit, big caramel, yeast, sweeter elements like burnt toffee. Solid.

Poured from one of the new 375 ml bottles. Aroma is fruity with lots of Belgian spice, phenols and esters. Moderate pineapple with light grain notes. Lots of cinnamon, ginger, allspice, clove and coriander notes with faint peppery notes. Light alcohol spice. Pours a slightly hazy, copper orange with a medium large, thick, white head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. Light lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with light malt notes of caramel, honey and toasted bread. Moderate pineapple notes with moderately strong bitterness. Medium light alcohol spice. Moderate cinnamon, ginger, allspice, coriander, clove and light pepper notes. Light fruity esters. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but there is a bit of a biting, astringent bitterness that may have come from the pineapple and spices.
