You know the kind. First time you meet her, it’s all girl‐next‐door sweetness. Then things take a turn for the vengeful. The spiteful. The bitter. In the Big Woods, she’s known as the Wicked Ex. She’s an IPA, Big Wood style: super loaded with hops and shot through with bitterness. Starts sweet, gets bitter, and just won’t quit. But that’s part of the deal with a Wicked Ex, isn’t it?

Pours a slightly hazy copper-amber, with mid-sized, quickly dissipating head. Aroma has some grass, some hops, but is surprisingly muted. Flavor is heavy on the malt and caramel of the grain, with some hop flavors in the background, but this is one that favors breadiness instead of tropical and citrus flavors. Not my favorite variety of IPA.

Can thanks to TheHoff43. Pours hazy amber, large puffy off-white head, dissipates fairly slowly leaving clumpy lacing. Aroma is pine and caramel. Flavor is medium sweet, medium bitter lots of pine resin and a strong caramel malt backbone. Medium body, somewhat resinous mouthfeel. This would have been a good IPA like 15 years ago. Not so much now.

Sample at Great Taste of the Midwest on 08/09/2014: Clear orange color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. The aroma is hoppy with grass and citrus notes. Medium body with flavors of citrus hops, toasted malt and pine. The finish is moderately bitter with a short hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.
