Opaque brown - black beer, good tan head. Softish palate, semi dry. Mild minerals. A little coffee. A whisper of wood and a nice Port Wine touch. Red berry fruits very well integrated. Semi dry finish. Lovely!

Very dark with a lot of darkbrown foam. Very complex and balanced beer. Notes of raisins, chocolate, coffee, port. Some vinous notes also. A bit sour. Very long aftertaste.

Big thanks to sebletitje for getting me this bottle. Thanks buddy! It pours a nice opaque very dark mahogany with a minute long tall mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up chocolate fruit cake fruitiness, raisins, prunes and fig like fruity esters. Yes. The taste has that pleasing mix of prunes, raisins and blackberries blending into dark roasted malts and yummy chocolate like goodness. Delicious brew with rich sweet dark fruity esters from front to back helping ground and round out the highly roasted malts and chocolate and I get no sense of the big ABV.

Bottled @ home. Pours pitch black color with a medium brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, sweet cookie like malts, biscuit. Also there is some spices around, something like anis. mint or coriander, together with the cherry pits from Black Albert. Taste is quite big roasty and sweet RIS with quite some cookie, but also with mint-like freshness and some cherry fruitiness. It’s an odd combination, which doesnt really seem to blend perfectly. I’d love to try Kate by itself now that I’ve tried this one.

11.2 oz. bottle, pours black with a medium foamy light brown head. Aroma of port barrels, dark fruits (raisins, black currants, grapes), and a tiny bit of roast. Flavour is very complex, with fairly prominent roasted malt, shit loads of dark fruits, and a complex port barrel quality that accentuates everything else. Dynamic and complex body, with perhaps a bit too much of the dark fruit quality for my taste. Great stuff nonetheless.

Pitch black, big tan head that dissipates to a thin layer with some lacing
Aroma of sweet dark malts, soft port, no alcohol
Taste of really rich dark malts, mellow roasted malts soft port wine, touch of dark fruits like raisins, dark chocolate malts, touch of dark toffee, hint of wood, really well blended, concentrated flavour, complex, alcohol noticeable but well hidden for 11.5%
Palate - Soft carb (once head had dissipated), full body, smooth, good mouthfeel, rich malts coat the mouth. Finish as main flavour, really smooth, dark fruity malts, hint of charcoal with some warming alcohol
Overall - This is a superb impy, so well balanced. Struise really do make awesome beers.

05/12 0.33 l bottle @Animal, Madrid, shared with teddybeer. It poured pitch black body with bigger brown head. Very nice chocolate, coffee, wood, bourbon and dark fruit aroma. Flavor was somewhere between bitter and sweet, offered whole palette of dark malts; chocolate, licorice, caramel, coffee just being the most prominent ones. Full in body, but with high drinkability, creamy on palate. Long, tasty finish reflected flavor with only a bit of alcohol warming. At the place I could only describe it as wonderful! Didn’t have the opportunity to try Kate the Great, but will try better now! Congratulations, both brewers.

Purchased at de Biertempel in Brussels, Belgium, enjoyed at home during the Christmas holiday weekend while watching the Bears play. Appearance is a thick pitch black with a rich dark tan head that rims around the glass. Aroma is rich in chocolate, molasses, coffee, dark fruit, as well as red wine/port. Taste goes down thick but smooth, very rich chocolate notes, roasted malt, has a unique fruity characteristic, and the port notes do come out a bit. This one traveled thousands of miles on a plane and in a variety of different temperatures, and it came out tasting pretty damn good.

Bottle @ Animal and shared with ’heavy’. Black colour with a tan and creamy head that quickly diminishes. Aroma is toasty, sweet, notes of dry fruits, bourbon, wood and slightly coffee. Flavor is light bittery, toasted and roasted malts, hints of caramel, dry and red fruits; also traces of Porto wine are present. Dense on palate with a smooth, rounded and balanced final. Carbonation is low to medium. Body is medium to high.
