Vintage 2011, BBE 2017. A black beer with a beautiful, dense, big and slightly yellowish brown head. The nose of sweet strawberries, roastiness and liquirice. The nice and fresh aroma, basicly, a simple, but very succesfully. Taste is strongly roasted, lots of black coffee, some strawberries, also quite high bitterness, nice sweetness, thus not very dry. Full bodied, smooth to drink. Very enjoyable beer, the strawberries are refreshning the powerfull flavours.

330ml Bottle: BBD 30 Aug 2017, poured carefully into my Westvleteren chalice on 5 Aug 2013 during a Belgian Beer Tasting Evening I hope with myself. Looked impressive in the chalice: dark moody and rich, the tan head sitting there like the raised portion of your mum’s best ever rice pudding. The malts give of intense coffee and chocolate notes into the nose: these carry on with extra strength into the taste. tries to be sweet, but the yeast and hops just about control the malts and keep the flavours in check, sweetness wise at least. The Port Barrel aging does come through a little, with a mild wine hint within the overall flavour, but you have to really search for it, or at least I had too. Good mouth feel to this brew: that’s to Ian Harrison for this bottle.

Port Barrel Aged bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a inky, completely black hued pour with a massive tan head with great lace and complete retention. Aromas are of port wine, candied raisins, figs and christmas cake, a bit of baba au rhum, christmas cake. Milk chocolate. Pretty decadent. Flavors are of dry, nutty cocoa, medium alcohol, toasty, very ashy, chocolate, nutty, raisins, lightly vinous. Graham cracker, a bit metallic, nutty, toasty wood. Burnt toast. Fuller bodied, medium carbonation, significant tannin.

11,2oz bottle shared by Travlr. Pitch black with an incessant beige head. Lots of depth, very drinkable for the ABV. Smooth chocolate tones, mild roast and oats. Smooth, sweet finish. The Port(?) adds a vinous taste to the finish. Delicious.

330 ml bottle that Adam Jackson was generous enough to share this!! Nose is port wine, roasted barely and prunes. The flavor is fantastic. Upfront is sweet chocolate malt that lingers forever. Deep roasted barley, cherry notes, raisins notes and the port wine really comes out in the finish. Big grape notes. The alcohol is completely masked. The body is thick but not overly so. Still more of a sipping brew but... Not difficult drain quickly. I really love how the port barrel added a level of complexity. I would say this brew is at its peak in flavor. Holding it much longer may not be a good idea.

From the cellar. Enjoyed at home with Chris.
A - Pitch black. slightly oily motor oil pour. Not as thick as the extreme stouts of ’13 but still, very nice appearance. Cocoa colored head fades to some nice lacing!
S - Lovely vinous sweet and grapey aroma. Dark malts, slight roast character, no booze but a great chocolate milk-chocolate sweetness.
T - Lots of chocolate, tons of big roasted barley, hints of espresso bean and some sweet candied sugar. VERY roasty, lots of oak, the port barrel adds this grape sweetness and mellow cough syrup taste that is both good and bad. It’s a big beer, so these variants sort of blend together and form something awesome.
M - My mouth is tingling. Heavy body, nice carbonation, very good balance, dry roasty finish
O - Very nice. Great to try and I’m glad to have enjoyed it with one of the top Portsmouth raters.

Very dark with dark cream head. Aroma has port sweetness and a touch of wood. Has a rich, warming feel. Bitter roasted malts are in a joyous fight with the sweeter, red fruits of port. Nice stuff.

33cl bottle pours a oily, opaque black with lacing, clumpy, beige head. Nose has a lot of red grape, some booze, a little nail polish, rich German chocolate cake, some light coconut, cherry cordial. Flavor is sweet, malty, dark chocolate, Lindt truffles, something just a touch sour, rhubarb, coffee grounds, overly oaked red wine, I think the Port wine flavors come out more. Finishes a little heavy at first, but ultimately fairly smooth. Nice.
