Kasteel Donker is a member of the Belgian quadrupel family. These are strong dark brown beers where the roasted malt predominates. The very first beer of the Kasteel range is a full-mouthed beer with hints of caramel, coffee and chocolate. The sweet initial taste makes this beer surprisingly complex but very accessible.

33 cl, bottle.
Pours dark-dark brown, nearly black with a thin beige head, which doesn't really disappear entirely. Nose is caramel, sweet and roasted malt. Flavor, body and finish is heavy - you need to take this beer one sip at a time :D

Bottle at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark mahogany with a small frothy cream head. There’s an aroma of dried fruit along with traces of alcoholic strength and ginger. In the mouth there is a bitter covering stretched over a sweet slightly viscous body. Plenty of variety in the flavour – hazelnuts, dark fruits, Belgian yeast, figs and hints of raisins and spice. Even some traces of soaked bread crusts later. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. This is nice – certainly hides its strength well !

500ml can, which is, or course, the appropriate serving size for such a beer - pours dark ruby with an off-white lace that is thick and lasts a while - lacks complexity for the style - mostly sweet dark fruit with faint spicy yeast character on the tail end - if I went in cold I would probably not guess the style - finish is plum and caramelized sugars - meh, it’s fine.

Backlog September 2011. Amber body under a moderate sized off-white head. Lovely aroma of malt, caramel, spices and brown sugar. Tasate is sweet malt, dry fruit, dark fruit, slightly spicy and moderate bitterness. Fine body with a smooth aftertaste. Nice and tasty with well hidden alcohol.
