Every beer has a story, here's Punkin Ale...
A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.
Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!
Since its debut, we've brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it's usually gone by Thanksgiving.

$5 bottle at Freikoten. Darker brown than, say, the Atom Smasher I just had, but cleaner, too. A thin head with a bit of persistence. Of course it smells of the stated sugar and spices, but does not overwhelm. Taste may still lean a little heavily on spices. Pumpkin is present as a slight squash taste, probably overmatched by malt fermentables. It is a little bit sticky. Slightly elevated abv plays a part in the good feeling this leaves.

2012 bottle. Aroma is dominated by the spices with quite a bit of allspice and nutmeg. Lighter notes of cinnamon and pumpkin. Aroma is fairly sugary. Pours a slightly cloudy copper with some amber hues. Thin pale head that quickly recedes. Faint lacing and faint legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some malt character upfront - toasted bread, nuts and caramel. Medium spice notes with the allspice and nutmeg again being most prevalent. Medium light bitterness in the finish. Light pumpkin character but I dont get any cinnamon really. Some lingering spice and toasted bread notes from the malt. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low but present astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall a bit better than I expected but at the end of the day it’s just another overly spiced pumpkin beer. I prefer my beer to taste like beer with hints of the flavor additives instead of the other way around.

Pours a hazy amber orange gold color with a small creamy beige head. Spicy toffee malt aroma is full of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Smooth toasted caramel malt flavor. Lot’s of pumpkin pie spice and brown sugar sweetness. Nicely balanced with a spicy hop finish. One of the best pumpkin ales currently available.

Some sips from a bottle, shared by Alice & Ton @ De Bierkoning, thanks! Clear golden to copper color. Aroma’s: pumpkin, cinnamon, hints of nutmeg & other spices. Sweetness & spices retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, herbs & spices. Medium bodied. Finishes herbal & moderate bitter. Fortunately not too sweet. Nice!

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a white wine glass. Pours clear amber with medium off-white head which dissapates quickly. Aroma is ok pumpkin, medium body, low carbonation, and some small bubble lacing. Taste is pumpkin, nutmeg, and some spice. Expected much more.

Bottle(courtesy of Jonas!): Hazy, some floaties visible, light amber coloured, cinnamon, nutmeg -as indicated on the label- in the nose, some fruits, too; moderate sweet-bitter flavour with a light acidity, medium bodied; same flavours as in the aroma plus a tinge of alcohol in the finish. Pretty horrible…
