Double Stout, part of Shepherd Neame’s Classic Collection range of beers, is based on a recipe discovered in a coded brewers’ log unearthed in the brewery archives.
Made with a blend of four different malts with a firm bitterness courtesy of local Kentish hops, it is a velvety smooth beer with dry, burnt flavours and cocoa and coffee notes.

Bottle from Tesco Extra, Aylesbury, Bucks, Tuesday 3rd June 2014 consumed the same day. Dark chestnut, actually I’m wrong it is much darker, nearer mahogany but with ruby glints and light tan head. A little burnt malt and some coffee, with a bit of bonfire toffee. Really roasty, smooth, full flavoured, toasty and with a little seam if bitterness running through. A little creamy cappucino. I like this its a great stout. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

Pours very dark with a light tan, lingering head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, cocoa powder. Medium body, though I was expecting it a tad thicker. Flavor is dominated by the roasted/burnt malt profile. It fills in the rest with coffee, light cocoa powder, and light earthy hops. Finish is dry and bittersweet. I wish the flavor stood up to the great aroma but it is still quite a nice stout.

0.5l bottle. This is a deep dark brown looking one with a medium sized quite lacing khaki colored head. On the nose, at first I get a little bit of licorice and sweet leather. Then after a while it turns more on the light roasted and coffee path. Some faint chocolate ice cream in the back. Smells nice. It tastes quite nice also. It's not a heavy thick imperial this, but a delicate not to subtle stout. Soft roasted dryness with hints of dry cocoa powder and dark chocolate. It feels oily in the mouth and the carbonation level is about average. Roasted almost light burned finish and aftertaste in this one. A good amount of flavor and class in this beer. Nice! 28.12.2013

Medium beige head. Clear dark brownish red body. Earthy soy sauce aroma with roasty sooty notes. Dry roasty sooty soy sauce taste with chocolatey earthy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty earthy licorice aftertaste with mineraly honey notes. Excellent! Subtle, full of flavour, and highly drinkable. (0.5l bottle, wine monopoly web order.)

500 ml bottle. Clear, dark brown almost black body with a small beige head. Pleasant aroma of dark, moderate roasted malt, hint of coffee, liquorice and some dry fruit. Flavor is sweet, moderate roasted dark malt, some bitterness and a hint of coffee. Well balanced body and average in aftertaste. A nice, classic dry stout.

Bottle. It pours a clear-looking dark brown body under a dense, finger thick beige head. The aroma is roasted, with some caramel notes and dried fruits. A bit one dimensional perhaps, but sure good. There’s a lightly burnt note in the flavor, with chocolate and coffee, some caramel and dried fruits. It’s full-bodied and dry with a nice carbonation. Lasting roasted finish with chocolate and coffee. A tasteful and pleasant one indeed. 140207

Bottle from Waitrose. Black body with a thin beige head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate cake, blackcurrants and burnt toast. Lovely flavour of fig, burnt wood and ash. Medium body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Soft fizz. Rich and tasty, but a bit on the thin side.
