Double Stout, part of Shepherd Neame’s Classic Collection range of beers, is based on a recipe discovered in a coded brewers’ log unearthed in the brewery archives.
Made with a blend of four different malts with a firm bitterness courtesy of local Kentish hops, it is a velvety smooth beer with dry, burnt flavours and cocoa and coffee notes.

Bottle. It pours a clear-looking dark brown body under a dense, finger thick beige head. The aroma is roasted, with some caramel notes and dried fruits. A bit one dimensional perhaps, but sure good. There’s a lightly burnt note in the flavor, with chocolate and coffee, some caramel and dried fruits. It’s full-bodied and dry with a nice carbonation. Lasting roasted finish with chocolate and coffee. A tasteful and pleasant one indeed. 140207

Bottle from Waitrose. Black body with a thin beige head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate cake, blackcurrants and burnt toast. Lovely flavour of fig, burnt wood and ash. Medium body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Soft fizz. Rich and tasty, but a bit on the thin side.

Bottle. Black beer with a strong brown frothy head. The aroma is deeply roasted, and the flavour is bitter and deeply roasted with a slight espresso coffee hit. Overall a very good strongly flavoured stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Swietne wytrawne dry stout. Gozkie, palone czekoladowo kawowe. Wszystko to mocno intensywnie i pachnace i zwlaszcza w smaku. Kolor czarny jak smola, oleiste i ciezkie. Tresciwe i bardzo wytrawne. Kremowa konsystencja brazowawej piany, ktora jest spora oblepia szklo i jest sztywna jak ubita piana na ciasto w mikserze. finisz bogaty i bardzo, bardzo dlugi wyrazisty i wytrawny. Nic prawie nie mozna zarzucic temu piwu. Do tego fajna elegandzka etykieta stylizowana na stare piwo. Arcy tradycyjne jest to piwo, godne poleceniu.

500ml bottle from Asda. Very dark brown with tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel and fruit. Bitter roasty flavour, with coffee Roast finish with very little carbonation. On the whole a great stout.

Bouteille 50cl, no BB date. Brune foncée, col beige léger. Arôme est malté, grillé, chocolaté sur un bouquet restant essentiellement dominé par les malts, le tout très enivrant. Léger café arrivant en rétro-nasal. Palais est malté assez léger, chocolaté pointe de chocolat noir amer. Houblon reste discret et procure juste une fine note d’amertume en fin de bouche. Le tout reste très léger même en tenant compte du terme ’double’, reste très anglais dans l’approche, sec presque sur une pointe de fumé.

Clear red brown beer, small irregular beige head, unstable, bit adhesive. aroma: lots of caramel, mocha, some coffee, grains, toast, bit nutty. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, caramel, lots of mocha, bitter hops, some cocoa powder, coffee. Aftertaste: bitter hops, mocha, coffee, some caramel. Solid low alcohol stout.

Bottle at home to see is 2014 with the missus and BBC1. colour is extremely dark brown and almost opaque. Gorgeous nose of chili chocolate, cherry and burnt espresso. Taste is bitter and dry, like drinking pure thirst. An excellent stout which goes some way to restore my faith in Shepherd Neame.
