Double Stout, part of Shepherd Neame’s Classic Collection range of beers, is based on a recipe discovered in a coded brewers’ log unearthed in the brewery archives.

Made with a blend of four different malts with a firm bitterness courtesy of local Kentish hops, it is a velvety smooth beer with dry, burnt flavours and cocoa and coffee notes.

500ml bottle into pint glass. Dark opaque beer (backlit, it is actually deep mahogany) with frothy tan-coloured head. Aroma of iced coffee, chocolate and cocoa. Full-bodied and bitter in the mouth. The finish is much more coffee-bitter. Touches of burnt wood and aspirin late on. A very adult type of stout, good for winter nights and log fires.

Bottle from Damian. Serious oxidized-like washing cloth aroma and flavour severely impairs the beer for me. Otherwise it is pretty dry and intensely roasty, but lacking some malty complexity. This is only plain ashy roast.

Pours black colour with small brown head. Beautiful smell of coffee and chocolate. Surprisingly high carbonation for a stout. Mouthfeel is a bit light at first but it turns into creamy soon enough. Taste is mostly burnt, roasted coffee with a very bitter and dry finish. Overall, quality stout and well worth a try but I’m a bit disappointed with it lacking some flavour other then burnt. Not for everyone.

500ml bottle from Ken Warne grocery store, Darlington. Black colour, beige foam head leaving some lacing and aroma of ash, coffee, roast malt, dark chocolate. Taste is smokey, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, liquorice and lingering bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roasted dark chocolate bitter finish. Quite drinkable.
