Double Stout, part of Shepherd Neame’s Classic Collection range of beers, is based on a recipe discovered in a coded brewers’ log unearthed in the brewery archives.

Made with a blend of four different malts with a firm bitterness courtesy of local Kentish hops, it is a velvety smooth beer with dry, burnt flavours and cocoa and coffee notes.

Bottled 500ml. -from Mercator Rudnik Ljubljana. Black coloured, medium sized brown head, chocolate nose. Roasted malt, chocolate, chicory, some caramel and quite bitter hops that shows up in the finish. Very good stout.

[10/15] Bottle. dark brown with a beige head. Roasty and slightly smoky aroma with coffee and licorice. Smooth, low carbonation. Sweet with creamy coffee, molasses, roasted malt, ash, licorice. Dry, peppery and moderately bitter at the end. Flavours are just OK really but it’s harmonious and slips down nicely. [3.4]Sometimes when you buy another few and look forward to drinking it it’s a mistake and sometimes it’s a sign that you rated it too low.

Draught @ Sivukirjasto. Rated on 2.10.2015
Aroma has tobacco, ash, coffee and licorice. Flavour has coffee, tobacco, licorice, ash. I like the dryness here – and this is not too high on toffee typical to English ales.

Keg at Beer Hunters. Dark brown color, good creamy beige head. Aroma has chocolate and hints of vanilla sugar. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Chocolaty, vanilla-minty flavor. A bit thin for abv but smooth lightly roasted classic stout. Quite sessionable.

Bottle from a asda drink in a field off coniston water. Opaque black clouded pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is robust dirty earthy, tangy roast, farmyard, rustic. Flavour is composed of woody, charred earth, scorched grass, dirty roast, mineral. Palate is medium light bodied, spritzy carbonation, lingering burnt toast and earthy roast. A bit harsh.

Bottle @ City Pub during RBScSG. Pours blackish brown with a big frothy beige head that leaves lots of sticky lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty with dark bread, caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, hay and soil. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty. Mouthfeel is soft, round, velvety and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, dark bread, toasted cereal, coffee, chocolate, moist soil and hints of iron. Solid stout I guess.
