Funk Metal is an unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally conditioned imperial stout fermented with farmhouse yeast, aged for months in oak barrels with wild yeast and souring bacteria, and then hand-blended with other barrel-aged beer to round out the palate. The finished beer retains aromas of chocolate and roast but takes on a distinct vinous character and sour complexity from extended aging and fermentation in oak barrels.

750ml bottle thanks to Rich. Pours out a dark brown topped with a tan head. Nose is oak rich roast malts vanilla cherries citrus coffee and some pit fruit. Taste is nice oak the rich malts cherries coffee vanilla leather and a nice tart sour funk.

Enjoyed on tap at Jester King taproom in Austin, TX, which may be my favorite new brewery. Appearance is pitch black with a thin tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of sour cherries, stinky cheese, dark chocolate, and espresso. Taste is tart up front and finishes lightly sweet, sourness definitely goes away nicely, one of the best sours I've had, happy to have had it at this great place.

Bottle. Black colour with a tan head. Aroma is sourness, cellar notes, yeast, citrus. Flavour is sourness, berries, funk, citrus, coffee, lemon, cellar notes, oak, vanilla. Very nice beer. KRS 080814.

Sample at the 2014 Infected Chimipalooza on 11/01/2014. Pours black with a medium thick tan head that diminishes gradually to a dense film. patchy lacing. Aroma of funky fruit, malt and oak. Medium body with flavors of dark fruits, chocolate malt and oak. The finish is fruity up front with an oaky vanilla aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

A touch on the mouth-puckering side without letting enough of the other character elements shine through, at least for me. Lots of citrus. Pours dark black. Bottle pour at Churchkey’s 5th anniversary.

Bottle at home, shared with James on my 40th birthday, 11/10/14. Black with a dirty khaki head. Nose is fruit balsams, dirt, funk, dark fruit rinds, musty wood rinse, light roast, spice. Taste comprises dark fruit peel, spice, dates, red berry sours, fruit balsams, dank wood notes, tarte red berry. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close washed through with funk and subtle acidity. Solid sour.

750ml bottle shared between 6 of us on 23rd Aug 2014 at the Midlands meeting. Not too sure my delicate palate wanted a sour Stout as beer number 13 on the day. Anyway this beer came out almost if not black, with a thin foam topping. Taste and aroma of an old coffee cup with grains going mouldy at the bottom, a rotting Kit Kat finger nestled on the saucer. I did not take to this beer one iota.

Bottle @ Midlands Tasting Group Aug 14, at Richie’s Hop Palace. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Taste is very sour chocolate with roasted & dark fruit notes. Really not my cuppa tea.

Bottle at Midlands Tasting Group via Cotteridge Wines; almost black pour with a thin tan head, chocolate and coconut aroma, taste has chocolate, coffee, some coconut, very sour, and some bitterness.
