Proud, headstrong, full of character. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave all these attributes to the rebellious Ghent “stroppendragers” or noose-wearers. And what goes for the people of Ghent also goes for this strong blonde beer.

Bottle. Somewhat hazy gold with a thick white head that lasts OK and laces well. Floral aroma with nectarines, dough, oranges. Sweet and yeasty/ fruity with a finish that dries out a bit and is moderately bitter and herbal. A bit like an attempt at an Orval knockoff with no Brett. Quite good, refreshing.

Original rating: 7/4/7/4/14=3.6. Bottle from Delhaize in Ghent. Rerate because I felt like it. Pours clear yellow with a big, slowly collapsing, frothy, white head; little lacing. Aroma of jenever, unripe banana, apple peel, straw, grain or cereal, yeast, bread, kitchen herbs, iron. Taste is light fruity sweet, some apple & apricot, faint unripe banana, quickly turning medium spicy bitter, peppery & grassy with a metallic touch, with early hop bitterness peeping through but remaining grainy as well; vague sourish lemon in the back. Dry, grassy & spicy hoppy finish, lingering unripe fruit, yeast, some warming jenever alcohol. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Easy drinker, not much more.

(Bottle, Lombard, Brussels, 14 Oct 2015) Golden colour with lasting, white head. Malty nose with bread, grass, citrus, pineapple and spicy hops. Malty, slightly fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, bread, some citrus, grass and a slightly metallic bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
