Proud, headstrong, full of character. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave all these attributes to the rebellious Ghent “stroppendragers” or noose-wearers. And what goes for the people of Ghent also goes for this strong blonde beer.

Original rating: 7/4/7/4/14=3.6. Bottle from Delhaize in Ghent. Rerate because I felt like it. Pours clear yellow with a big, slowly collapsing, frothy, white head; little lacing. Aroma of jenever, unripe banana, apple peel, straw, grain or cereal, yeast, bread, kitchen herbs, iron. Taste is light fruity sweet, some apple & apricot, faint unripe banana, quickly turning medium spicy bitter, peppery & grassy with a metallic touch, with early hop bitterness peeping through but remaining grainy as well; vague sourish lemon in the back. Dry, grassy & spicy hoppy finish, lingering unripe fruit, yeast, some warming jenever alcohol. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Easy drinker, not much more.

(Bottle, Lombard, Brussels, 14 Oct 2015) Golden colour with lasting, white head. Malty nose with bread, grass, citrus, pineapple and spicy hops. Malty, slightly fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, bread, some citrus, grass and a slightly metallic bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.

Poors Clear golden/brittle white head. Smells spiced. Taste sweet grain w/earthy nettle like hops, spices, lemon, cloves, alcoholic, overripe peach. Unsubtle yeasty Belgian clove ale. Don’t drink it too cold!

Trockener, mild bitterer Antrunk. Die leichte Hefigkeit wirkt kraftlos, wird aber schnell würziger. Hell bleibend, zitronig, weich. Gut trinkbar. 9/9/10/8/5/8

Bottle shared by Roman (no kidding). Clear golden with fluffy white head. Yeasty, light lemon, quite spicy, honey and sweet malts. Quite herbal too and a soft yoghurt touch. Medium sweet with light to medium bitter finish. Medium bodied. Decent.
