Proud, headstrong, full of character. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave all these attributes to the rebellious Ghent “stroppendragers” or noose-wearers. And what goes for the people of Ghent also goes for this strong blonde beer.

Launched in 2011, this is a typical top-fermented blonde aimed at tourists frequenting outdoors cafés in Ghent, the inhabitants of which are called ’stroppen’. Big and rocky, lightly yellowish white head, pale golden blonde colour, clear with an enormous and beautiful amount of fizz, even more so than a glass of champagne would show. Weak aroma of green apple, pear, young cheese, vanilla, grassy hops. Soft and lightly fruity taste, apple touch, bit grainy, rather neutral, light malt sweetness, finish mildly hopped, thirst-quenching but not really bitter. Straightforward and shallow but technically correct, this serves its purpose as a simple but nice looking beer to pour down thoughtlessly whilst enjoying the view of the old Ghent city centre...

330ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours clear gold with thin head. Aroma is fairly sweet and sugary. Taste is slightly metallic, with yeast, straw, sugar and very light citrus. Bit too highly carbonated for me though. Ok but nothing more.

33 cl. bottle @ home, gift from Niek. Hazy light golden with a white head. Fruity aroma. Pilsener-like hop profile with some yeastiness. Nice bitterness.

Dumpy 33cl bottle: BBD 24th June 15, poured into a Westmalle chalice at home on 24th April 14. No sediment left the bottle: I got a bright, clear and clean light golden brew with carbonation bubbles rising to the full and deep snowy white blanket on top. Mild yeasty aroma, some floral hop notes too. The taste is a pleasant blend of hops and maltiness, with the yeast presence showing in the flavour along with a mini citrus trace. Refreshing, but not really interesting or different enough for me to want another.

Boring beer. Has nice marketing, with the beer hanging on a gallow, but the taste is uninspired.

Hazy pale golden colour, good frothy white head, good lacing. Fresh slightly sweet aroma, grain, yeast. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, grain, yeast. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste taste, lingering mouthfilling bitterish finish.

Bottle, at John Bull. It’s an almost entirely clear one, golden in color and with a big, white head that lasts. Nice lacings. Fruity nose with a faint yeast note and white sugar. Apples and pears and a faint cellar touch. There’s a pleasant bitterness in the flavor, with fruits like apples and pears and some banana and lemon hints. White sugar and a herbal, lightly spiced touch. Full body, nice carbonation level, and quite dry. Lasting finish with a nice bitterness and some fruityness. A bit too much white sugar, especially in the aroma, but overall it’s quite nice. 131124
