Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with some light dry coffee notes is interesting. Taste is also dominated by black chocolate notes with dry roasted malt and light coffee with some dust and light smoky/tobacco notes. Body is full with medium carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Good drinkable stout without as much complexity as I was expecting.

(500mL bottle from LCBO) Pours near-black with deep mahogany highlights at the rim and a decent sized head of fairly dense pale brown froth, decent lacing. Aroma is malt-forward as expected, some roast, dark chocolate, a little coffee, dark fruits (grape-like), also a fairly prominent licorice/grass hop profile in the nose to set off the richness, some alcohol present. Flavour at first is roast malt, dark fruit, coffee, licorice, slight sweetness. Cereal/oat character in the middle, bit of light-roast coffee character and an increasing green hop character. Finish dry, fair amount of hop resin/bitterness for style, some roast, alcohol heat. Mouthfeel medium but a little oily, carb soft, alcohol present but not overwhelming given ABV. This is a quality imperial stout on the hoppy side of the spectrum, and quite a tasty drinker.

500ml bottle bought by Stefan at BrewDog Leeds. Kindly shared with Elisabeth, Jan Erik and me. Pitch black body, tiny, light brown head. Poor lacing. Prominent dark malty smell of coffee and dark chocolate. Comprehensive flavour character of cocoa, dark vanilla, ash and grain leading to a roasted malt-bitter ending, long-lived. Well bodied. A very tasty stout (session in Tromsø 30.07.2013).

[5/4/13] Draught at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. Black with a brown head. Aroma of roastiness and quite a bit of hops, a bit herbal and piney. Rather bitter flavor with some roastiness, sweet chocolate and piney hops. Rather full-bodied. Good stuff.

Mighty and strong like Smaug’s breath. Well balanced, rich and complex stout, excellent taste and aroma that combines coffee, bitter chocolate, aged brandy and hop bitterness.
