Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Brown bottle, 500 ml, via Importations Privées Bièropholie (merci Hughes!), savoured on May 1 2013; eye: black, opaque, tiny sheet of brown head, light lacing; nose: roasted barley, roasted malt, dark coffee, dark chocolate, slight fruity; mouth: roasted barley, roasted malt, dark coffee, dark chocolate, acridness, astringency, burnt barley, light acidity, slight fruity, dry finale in roasted barley with presence of burnt barley, full body, good carbonation, quite bitter, oily texture; overall: quite good FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 500 ml, via Importations Privées Bièropholie (merci Hughes!), savourée le 1er mai 2013; œil : noire, opaque, petite couverture de mousse brun foncé, légère dentelle; nez : orge torréfiée, malt torréfié, café noir, chocolat noir, très léger fruité; bouche : orge torréfiée, malt torréfié, café noir, chocolat noir, âcreté, astringence, orge brûlée, légère acidité, très léger fruité, finale sèche en orge torréfiée avec présence d’orge brûlée, corsée, bonne carbonatation, pas mal amère, texture huileuse; en résumé : pas mal bon

Bottle. Black colour with a tan head. Aroma is soya sauce, molasse, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt. Flavour is sweet, molasse, hop, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, licorice. Full body. Very nice beer.

Opaque black beer, tidy white head. Airy soft head. Nice rich dark malt that doesn’t get heavy thanks to the light palate. Super mild roast. Lactose and a little licorice. Mild hop bitterness and a little pine. Nice stout - rich but light on it’s toes.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark brown pour, quickly disappearing tan head, roast malt aroma, taste is roast malts, liquorice, expresso coffee slight hint of chocolate, warming alcohol, a big wonderful stout.

Bottle from Beers of Europe, King’s Lynn
Pitch black color, with medium sized brown head. Aroma of roasted malts (too much), cardboard (light) and roasted nuts (nice); also an impression of tobacco and talc. The mouthfeel is very smooth; god roasted malt flavor, maybe a bit too roasty, but with nice and quite rich chocolate too; strong bitterness; it has a light sourness from the dark malts; the roasted character in the end is stronger, luckily also the body is full.
A bit too much on the roasted malt side, but it’s a very good and solid Imperial Stout.

500 ml bottle into snifter. Purchased from The Party Source, Bellevue, KY. Color is tar black only a small ring of tan head. Taste is extremely full bodied with an oily texture. The flavor is has lots and lots of roast, a little chocolate and some minor dark fruit notes. Roasted malt is layered and has complexity. Hints of bitter hops or chocolate in the finish helps with the balance. Slightly burning warmth of alcohol after the sip. The booze is pretty harsh as it hits room temperature. That is the only flaw. Would have been better to let it sit a year to mellow out the booze. Other than that, still a damn nice RIS.
