Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Half pint at Vulture’s Lane. Extremely dark, like super dark. Strong coffee and caramel flavours with a slightly milky finish. Excellent.

Bottle (from Koht, Tallinn). Pours black with brownish head. The small head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, roast, malt, dark chocolate, smoke. Flavor is sweet and bitter, roast, dark chocolate, malt, some smoke, and hops. Finish is roast bitter with some sweetness. Overall: very nice.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of tan foam that dissipates fairly quickly. Treacle aromas stand out with loads of bakers chocolate. Soy sauce on the palate, with more cacao and umami. Umami bomb, fairly one-dimensional impy. Just not good enough to be world class. Nice first try at an imperial stout though.

Great for my ipad, I guess. Poured at 12.1 celcius it has huge head but dissipates a little too quickly, jet black licorice body. Heavy fusels, molasses, sugar mixed with motor oil on the nose, no finesse to it just brute force of sweetness and alcohol. Flavour is subdued, swampwater candy with hints of chocolate. Pretty good but not complex enough for its accolades.

Tasting at my place. Dikke zoete melasse dijk, mooi zacht en goed in balans maar ondertussen flink hoppig. Chocolade, koffie, autobanden met vanille. Backlog from 2015/05/26.

500ml bottle at home. Black color with nice beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, coffee, chocolate, cocoa, dark dried fruits, vanilla, caramel, light bread in the beginning , hoppy notes too. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Full silky oily to creamy body with soft carbonation.

Appearance is jet black, with a half-finger fluffy light brown/tan head. Leaves a muddy film around the glass. Aroma- rich chocolate, brownies, espresso coffee, vanilla fudge, lots of roast malt, liquorice undertones, leather. Taste- loads of dark, roast malt, black coffee, dark, bitter chocolate, burnt treacle, chocolate biscuit, hints of vanilla and dark fruit towards the finish. As it warms up more leathery and tobacco smoke characteristics emerge. Mouthfeel is clingy and a bit fudgy, with a very lengthy and satisfying finish. Excellent stuff.

Keg. Leeds International Beer Festival. Just about black. Thin, bubbly, sticky, tan head. Thick, viscous, and leggy. Mocha coffee. Vanilla. Fruity hop. Vinous. Taste is sweet coffee. Roast coffee bitter. Has a light, vinous tang. Manages to be smooth and easy drinking. Finishes long, roast coffee bean bitter. Super.
