To appeal to the hard drinking populace of Czarist Russia, English brewers developed this very strong and rich style of beer. Black and viscous, and heavily hopped, it became a favorite of the Imperial court, from which it takes its name.

Draft - Roast malts and some fruity notes. Deep jet black with a rich brown head. Light sweet roast malts, dark fruit and some sweetness. Pretty mellow and boring for the style.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub - Princeton, 4/21/13

Aroma: It has a chocolaty nose, fairly sweet, with some lighter roast notes as well
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a heavy tan head and coating lace
Flavor: The taste is medium sweet and chocolaty, balanced by some light bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a fairly creamy feel, and it comes off as rather easy to drink
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty good one. It's a solid example of the style, and a nice beer. I certainly didn't have any complaints.

On tap at the Brew Pub, Philadelphia 18-11-08. Pours black with a creamy very Guinness like head on top apart from the head is tan in colour. The taste is exceptionally smooth and creamy with some nice soft and roasty flavours a bit like Irish coffee at times in both appearance and smoothness but with less of a coffee edge. The alcohol whilst ever present never intrudes and is a warming presence. A good beer that I was hoping would have been even better, but it lacked overall complexity to move it onto the next notch. [At GABF, 2004] A pitch black beer with a small disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet roasty with slight coffee notes. The flavor is sweet and roasted with weak notes of chocolate and coffee as well as hints of alcohol, but the alcohol burns slightly in the finish. Too sweet and too simple for me.
