Schwarzbier aged in bourbon barrels

Bourbon Barrel Aged Sustenance Black Beer is our spring Schwarzbier (black lager) aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. It features rich roasted malt qualities with bold flavors of vanilla, charred oak, and even a slight nuttiness. The light, crisp finish makes this bourbon soaked beer light in flavor, which is wonderful because it highlights the complexities of the bourbon aging process.

355ml bottle. Clear darkest brown to black colour with small, minimally lacing, tan head. Intense Bourbon aroma, vanilla, oak, leather, overlays any other flavours. Taste is initially moderately sweet dark malty, some vanilla flashes up, then dry oak and leather notes gain ground. In the finish the malt and barrel flavours mix up to a slightly fruity, dark berry note. Intense aroma is suggestive of a substantially heavier beer.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color, relatively translucent still, not a bunch of head - mostly wispy off-white. Aroma was caramel, sweet roasted malts, vanilla notes, bourbon notes. Flavor was smooth bourbon, vanilla notes, with notes of wood and sweet toasted malts.

Cloudy dark brown beer. Dry crisp palate. Mmm bit sour this - like a very sour Porter. Unsweet wood provides dryness. A splash of bourbon adds to the sourness. Finishes tangy and dry. Dissapointing beer from Shorts (who I love). Too dry and sour with nothing to balance. 2.6

2014. Much more mellow sourness now. The bourbon and oak come through. Mild dark fruits. Still a little woody bitterness. Finishes light and semi dry. Decent.

Bottle @ Danish Summer Gathering, Ulfborg 2011. #1000. I was lucky enough to have a decent beer for my 1000 rating, since that day we had a lot of crappy ones :D. Black color with a small creamy bege head. Roasted malty aroma, vanilla, caramel, bourbon, wood, alcohol. Tastes smooth roasty, with lots of bourbon and a sligthly alcoholic finish. Very nice nevertheless.

Bottle. Frothy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Moderate malty and light hoppy messy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Strong chocolate notes, alas exstremly messy beer due to the bourban barrel. Average moderate bitter not pleasent finish. Oily palate.

Bottle. Deep brown body. Fizzy, light tan head, quickly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, bourbon, oak, vanilla with hint of licorice and alcohol. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. The bourbon compliments the beer rather than overpowering it. However, the beer is too sweet to compliment the bourbon. The roasted flavors and bourbon work together well. Tastes of molasses, bourbon, vanilla, cocoa and bourbon. An interesting beer.
