Schwarzbier aged in bourbon barrels
Bourbon Barrel Aged Sustenance Black Beer is our spring Schwarzbier (black lager) aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. It features rich roasted malt qualities with bold flavors of vanilla, charred oak, and even a slight nuttiness. The light, crisp finish makes this bourbon soaked beer light in flavor, which is wonderful because it highlights the complexities of the bourbon aging process.

12 oz bottle from the brewery. Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma, holy hell, it’s all kinds of sweet vanilla frosting, molasses, bourbon, cocoa. A bit more restrained in the flavor department, but still similar, sweet with molasses, bourbon, vanilla, smoke, oak, cocoa, red grape. Again kind of frosting-esque in its sweetness. Deep and complex beer, yet it has the refreshing palate of a lager. Very surprising and extremely good.

Bottle. A clear, reddish dark brown with a small, dense, light beige head. Licorice, roasted malts and spicyness on the nose. Some coffee too. The flavor is roasted, spiced and peppery, with some licorice notes and a decent bitterness chiming in towards the end. Medium to full body, a bit sweetish. Lasting sweet, malty and roasted finish with some spicynes. A quite delicious beer. 110819

reviewed 6/15/2009 Received in trade from jtrockchalk in the Black Booty Bif, Thanks for the opportunity! Pours a deep dark brown with the faintest of ruby highlights and a huge bubbly off white head that sticks around forever. Smells of lemony citrus, bourbon, vanilla, faint bit of bretty horsehair, and cocoa. Slightly sour on the nose, is that supposed to be there, or did some bugs hitch a ride from barrel to bottle? This would certainly explain the spirited carbonation. Taste is a bit sour with some chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla thrown in. Carbonation is quite high, body is medium but filled with bubbles, mouthfeel is creamy but slick. I enjoyed this one, but I’m not sure its a schwartzbier anymore. Very flavorful, but the carbonation ruins the mouthfeel for me. I’d love to try a fresh bottle if someone wants to send me another.
