Schwarzbier aged in bourbon barrels

Bourbon Barrel Aged Sustenance Black Beer is our spring Schwarzbier (black lager) aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. It features rich roasted malt qualities with bold flavors of vanilla, charred oak, and even a slight nuttiness. The light, crisp finish makes this bourbon soaked beer light in flavor, which is wonderful because it highlights the complexities of the bourbon aging process.

sampled at RBSG 2010 - Pours near black and smells of roast malt and bourbon. The flavor is roasty with a light bourbon character. It’s medium bodied and while it’s alright, seems to be lacking something. It doesn’t come together as well as I expected nor have the bourbon character one would think 11 months would give it.

750ml via a trade with Secret Santa. Pours with a near black body and a huge foamy tan head that leaves great lacing. Aromas of brown sugar, molasses, baked bread, vanilla, bourbon, cola, cocoa, coconut, wood, and rye. Flavors of are dry, roasty, lightly vinous and a touch sour. Cocoa, dusty, roasted. Licorice. A lot of bitterness. Thin with medium carbonation. Okay.

On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Deep opaque brown body, medium tight cream head. Strong, buttery oak nose, with roasted malts and cocoa. Oak barrel flavors dominate the body, with bourbon and buttery tannins in addition to alcohol heat (despite the relatively low reported ABV). Beneath the oak and bourbon lurk sweetish berries and chocolate, although the base beer is mostly overwhelmed. Hot and a bit thin, an interesting aging experiment for a rather light beer.

Keg on the RBSG bus. Black with a nice lacy head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, a little chocolate. Rather light body, with a distinct sour edge. Lots of barrel flavor, little roasting.

Served on draft at Hopcat in Grand Rapids. Pours a dark brown color with a thin white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of bourbon with a big buttery note and some faint cherry notes. The taste is bourbon, cherries, a buttery note, faint nuttiness and faint hops in the finish. Medium-full bodied. Decent beer.

On tap. Poured a very dark brow with an off-white head that lasted and laced. Aroma had plenty of sweet bourbon notes with underlying sweet and dark grains. Flavor was similar with plenty of sweet bourbon that blended well with sweet grains and a bit of chocolate.

Bottle: Poured a brown color with off white head. Aroma is thick burnt malt and nice bourbon mix. Taste is very burnt roasted malt that is cut by bourbon old age.

Bottled. A slightly hazy deep red beer with a thin beige tan head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, bourbon, and alcohol. The is sweet with notes of lightly roasted malt, alcohol, bourbon, wood, red berries, and roasted bread, leading to a dry roasted and alcoholic finish. The alcohol burns the tongue. A bit too much for me. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.
