So called because of its truly "ruinous" effect on your palate, this massive hop monster will change forever your preconceptions of what defines good beer. This is Stone IPA's big brother, and we mean BIG. We essentially began with our already-awesome Stone IPA, threw in an extra-large helping of malt, and added a lot more hops. And then some more. And then even more, resulting in a vibrant blast of citrusy bitterness that hits you on the first sip. Just one taste and you'll know why we call this indelicate jewel "A liquid poem to the glory of the hop!"

22 oz. bomber, $6 at Binny’s. Gotta have something to make up for skipping Dark Lord Day. And anyway, t’hell with cellaring IIPA’s!If this sat around getting old, I might miss the heading smell of green, citrusy, piney and catty hops as soon as I pop the cap. In my IPA tulip, it’s light coppr color, a little hazy, with a big poof of slightly orange foam. Even more sticky IPA smell in the glass. Tasting is cautionary. Full of flavor IPAs more than bitter ones. Oh, it still curls up underneath my palate, and my lips pucker just from having the beer pass over it. But it’s also a big showroom of all the different flavors hops are capable of, where you drive the one you want home now. Did I mention a thick malt with caramel and honey overtones. That’s a supporting feature, like white sidewall tires and free undercoating.

66cl Bottle, via trade with Lithy (thanks Justin!). Slightly hazy orange colour, white head. Aroma of cabbage, brie, citric hops. Flavour is light fruity, caramel, earthy liquorice root powder, hints of sprouts, very bitter grapefruity hop finish. Very bitter aftertaste. Good stuff, although I didn’t dig the cabbage/brie aroma’s. 638315 Re-rate Fresh sample at Stone Tasting at Beer Temple. Fresh citrussy hop aroma, pine, spruce, no off aroma’s as in the old bottle I had. Much better. 838316

12 oz. bottle, pours a potent bright orange with a white head. Extremely hoppy aroma, with a more citrusy than grassy aroma compared to the regular IPA. Mouth-watering, potent hops flavour. One of the best IIPAs out there.

Bomber, pours golden with a frothy white head that retains nicely. Aroma is a bit more faint than anticipated, very hoppy. Taste is also surprising, much more bitter than what I was expecting, with citrus notes. Very very good IPA. Also tried this one out in 12 oz bottle form after running the Chicago Half Marathon. Fantastic brew to relax with after running a long race.

Good DIPA with lots of hops and lots of bitterness. The grassy, citric hops push the beer a bit towards paint thinner levels of bitterness, but it’s a pleasant, interesting over-the-top-ness, a line that Stone regularly walks. The malt backbone is just enough to tone down the bitterness to manageable levels.

Growler. A true leader in the category of the IPA. Pours a clear, golden-orange with a fine, pure white head. The innocuous appearance doesn’t prepare the drinker for the journey that follows. Huge hop aroma with big notes of orange, grapefruit and pine. Flavor accentuates the hop character. Piney and resiney, this brew wallops the taste buds with intense hops bitterness. Some sweet malts enter the fore to offset the bitterness, Dry, hoppy, lip-smacking, sticky finish. A must-drink for the hop-heads out there.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours an orange/gold colour with a white head. Aromas of citrus, hops, quite floral. Interesting. Huge hop attack in the taste. Flavours of citrus, summer fruits, light malts, caramel. Mouthfeel leaves a strong impression. Finishes unsurprisingly hoppy with an underlying bitter-sweet tang. Very nice.

Bomber. Aromas of citrus, grapefruit. Appearance is cloudy gold, decent head, decent lacing. Good balance between the malt and hops. Hops are still the dominant flavor here. Very citrusy flavor. Not quite as full-bodied as I was hoping, but definitely not watery. Good IPA, but I’ve had better.
